Young player target tier list

Created by: qc14
Team: 2023-24 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 9, 2024
Published: Jan. 9, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Given that it's rumored the Caps are looking to add another younger player (much like how they got Sandin last year even when they were sellers at the deadline) I thought I'd make a wishlist based off of my opinion of the player, the fit, and what I think the acquisition cost would be.

Go for it:
Chychrun -- a 1/2d is a hugely underrated need for this team and Chychrun has been a beast this year. Given the precedent with Ottawa and the DeBrincat deal, I don't think the acquisition cost for him would be too prohibitive.
Frost -- Torts has been an underrated and over-hated coach his entire career but analytics guys are right about how poorly Frost has been used in PHI. Could probably be gotten without giving up any real premium future assets.
Johnson -- went through a rough patch with the org earlier in the year, also stuck long-term behind Fantilli and Sillinger. Would expect around the Sandin package to get him.

Eh:
Zegras -- high end offensive skill but not convinced he's a real driver. Asking price could be ridiculous
Chabot -- I think he's worse than Chychrun and has a much worse contract. There's a reason OTT hasn't had much success with him as their 1d. Have no idea what OTT would want
Norris -- Forward version of Chabot basically. Also think asking price would be way too high.
Krebs/Broberg -- putting them together because of how similar their situations are. Worth a flier if available for cheap but would not want to give up more than a 3rd for either. Would probably be behind Lapierre/Iorio on the depth chart.
Kaako -- not convinced he's anything more than a 3w but would be intriguing with a bigger role. Assume NYR would be hesitant to give up / would want a more win-now package. Something around Dowd maybe?

Hard pass:
Laine -- poor man's Ovi / wing Kuzy. Has not had a good year since his rookie season.
Mangiapane/Kuzmenko -- both are good players but not the right age range/contract status I would be aiming for, and probably overvalued by their current teams.
Lindholm -- not a 1c on a good team and asking for that kind of money
Tarasenko/Monahan -- good players but not what this team needs right now.
Kubalik/Oloffson -- same as above but take out the good players part
Vrana -- give it up guys, it's not happening

Probably not available/price definitely prohibitive:
Konecny -- with PHI looking good I don't see why they move him, especially in division
Ehlers -- there was a world as recent as this offseason where he was underutilized and under-appreciated on a jets team that looked like it was going nowhere, none of those things are true now.
Kyrou/Thomas -- these two as players/fits for what the caps need are probably the best out of anyone on this list. Doesn't seem like STL is rebuilding though and even if they do I think the asking price for either would probably include Leonard which I wouldn't do.

Kent Johnson is not a center, but he is a damn good 2LW on a line with Sillinger and Laine.

Kakko isn't leaving NYC, unless you're sending Ryan Leonard up here to play with his BC/Team USA buddy Gabe Perrault of course

I think you’re wrong about Lindholm. He is an elite 2-way center which the caps are seriously lacking.

Krebs for a 2nd..... ?

Krebs has 6 points in 38 games this year and 55 in 173 on his career. I would be very hesitant to give up a second for Krebs, especially when the Caps can't really offer him (at the moment, all though that could change if they make other moves) much better usage than he's getting in Buffalo right now.

i think it would have been nice.to see what you are willing to offer for the players you targets. i have a feeling many of them could be beyond what you are willing to pay.

Here are some of the more interesting ones. This is what I personally would do, not what I think BMac would. Definitely know some of these are controversial:

Chychrun - WSH 24 first, top 5 protected + Jensen or TVR (DeBrincat comp)
Frost - Lapierre or Chesley or 2nd + 3rd
Johnson - WSH 24 first top 10 protected, more likely try to get a mid/late first some other way and move that (Sandin, Dach comps)

Zegras - 24 1st + Jensen or TVR
Kaako - Dowd (50% retained) + best of 3 25 2nds

Konecny - 24 1st + Miroshnichenko
Kyrou - 24 1st + McMichael + Chesley or Iorio or Suzdalev + best of 25 2nds
Thomas - 24 1st + McMichael + Miroshnichenko + best of 25 2nds (all 3 of these with the meier deal in mind)

IMO the Caps' future pieces are divided up like this:
Leonard
-gap-
Protas
McMichael
24 1st
-gap-
Miroshnichenko
Cristall
-gap-
Lapierre
Iorio
Chesley
Suzdalev

Kent Johnson is certainly not stuck behind Cole Sillinger and would certainly not be available and certainly not for a top 10 protected pick. He's been pretty much the best forward since December.

CBJ need exactly what he brings and they aren't going to sell a 21 year old for a discount.

Blues aren't trading either Thomas. Kyrou is very unlikely unless it's a very very very good package

i think your last 3 comps are probably the closer. the frost one could be aswell depending on how much philly values the prospects.

if the other one are moved, i dont think the offer would be what they would be targetting, probably looking for players ready to help sooner instead of picks.

Ironically some analytic folk believe Cristall has elite upside and he is already / will be better than Leonard. Fascinated you have him so far down. Protas and McM should basically be untouchable. Easily amazing 3rd line / 2nd combo.

I would have:
Leonard and Cristall in a hard to obtain group. Watch some of Cristall highlights

I'm high on Cristall but not quite as high as the analytics people -- a bit too boom or bust for me. I agree Protas and McM are / will be a great middle 6 combo -- If you can get part of a top line combo for them though you have to do it.

Thomas 100% isn't available. Kyrou most likely isn't either. That being said, to be cautious about moving Leonard for Thomas is absolutely wild. He's a young 1C who is playing matchups and scoring over a PPG.

What’s the rush? Capitals can simply just sign lindholm if they want to compete or suck and get a top 5 pick? Way more important to lock up great middle 6 talent like McM and Pro long term imo. Zegras isn’t a #1 c. Frost isn’t better than McM would be a great 1-2 punch though. If I’m the capitals I’m keeping my prospects. Would hate to see Cristall become the next forsberg

I agree with that but if they can get a legit young top line talent then I'm open to moving either of them. Definitely don't think its likely though.

Draft one. Team just needs to retool and stop trying to compete. It’s literally killing them at this point.
