Team: 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 10, 2024
Published: Jan. 10, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Ideally Montreal would trade Jake Allen but without retention I don't see it being worth it, there's no reason to trade him for lets say a 5th when we can get more next year when we have a retention spot open (or if we don't retain on Pearson) because a goalie with the experience and ability Allen has, for less than 2 mil (with retention) is worth more than a late round pick.
Trades
1.
MTL
  1. Kakko, Kaapo
Additional Details:
Almost identical contracts, Kakko isn't working in New York and getting a reliable 3C who can play top 6 minutes if needed for him makes a lot of sense to me. For the habs, they get a guy who once was regarded as highly as Jack Hughes, and while I don't expect he becomes anywhere near that good they need players who can play now but also guys who could help us compete in the fututre and taking a shot on Kakko seems worth it to me. Jeff Gorton was the GM who drafted him and the new habs management have taken shots on young players who've needed a change in scenery (Dach, Newhook, Gurianov) so it's not far fetched to think he does it again.

*This is just an idea, there could be picks added to either side but I'm just focusing on the players
2.
MTL
  1. Frost, Morgan
Additional Details:
Another young player who might need a change, was pretty good for philly last year but doesn't seem to have a spot solidified in the lineup this year. I have no clue what he would cost in a trade but I'd guess a 3rd would work for both sides?
PHI
  1. 2024 3rd round pick (MIN)
3.
MTL
  1. Dellandrea, Ty
  2. Faksa, Radek
  3. 2026 3rd round pick (DAL)
Additional Details:
Faksa makes $3.25 mil for this year and next, and has 7 points this season, that's not good enough. The stars are rumoured to be in the market for a defenseman and while Kovacevic probably isn't the solution he's a league minimum defenseman who's be solid when he's played for the habs so far this season. Tanner Pearson makes half what Faksa does with retention and is a free agent after this season, giving the stars more flexibilty this offseason. Faksa alone isn't enough for Pearson and Kovacevic, he might not even be worth future considerations given his contract but I wouldn't expect it to cost Dallas too much to dump his contract and get Pearson and Kovacevic in return. Dellandrea has only played in half of the stars games this season and I would say he needs a change to see if he can live up to the potential he showed in juniors and the AHL
DAL
4.
MTL
    Future Considerations

If you can get rid of him without giving up anything, do it, but I highly doubt we can move him on. Should be back in Laval when they start getting their players back

Drury hears you out and says not in a million years. But he does offer you a 2nd round pick for Monahan.....max.

Monahan has 8 times as many points in twice as many games as Kakko, and has proven in the past he can be a point per game player, although those days are likely done he's got 40 points in 64 games as a hab, a better pace than Kakko has ever scored at, and Monahan is 57.4% on faceoffs this season, 10th in the league for players with over 100 faceoffs this season, making him a great guy to have even when the offense isn't there. With Kakko being a free agent this summer I don't know if the Rangers would be willing to pay him given how little he's produced under Laviolette this season, but he hasn't played since November so it's possible he comes back from injury better than he was before

Monahan has injury risk and probably looking for 1 last big contract and he’s mainly a center

Rangers need cheap RW which Kakko fits and defensive responsible players

If Monahan is so good, why are YOU offering him up one for one?

Monahan played RW last season with Suzuki and Caufield and he was great. He's on a 2M contract and would probably extend for cheap on a contender since he already earned a lot of money in his career so far. But i don't think he's a right fit for the Rangers. I think he'll be traded to a Canadian team like Winnipeg.

I didn’t say Monahan sucked did I? Nah, read it again. I said Kakko has been fine. Not up to your standards and that’s okay. NYR needs high end defensive players too. Cheap 3RW that’s super defensive is just fine. Everyone outside of NYR seems to be concerned and it’s funny

    A 3rd isn't enough for Frost. Flyers likely looking for a 1st, I think a 2nd and a prospect would do it.

because he's not a long-term peice for Montreal, and i said there's likely picks somewhere but the main idea was Kakko for Monahan
