That is a hilarious overpay for Tanev. A 1st on it's own ought to do it. Even then I don't love the Canucks trading 1st round picks for rentals.

The 1st at this point will be a pretty late one, plus we'd have to pay extra to get retention in a deal between rivals.

Ya but still Tanev is old man. Not to mention that is hardly any retention. If it were a 1st and Jett Woo fair enough even still I'd rather target a non rental solution at this stage.

Yeah yeah we get it, you think Tanev is the second coming of Bobby Orr and you are willing to pay anything for him.

Tanev with only 500k in retained salary shouldn't cost more than a 1st, if Calgary is willing to retain salary at all.

Boosterjuice for Novak is a no-go. Hunter has a ton of value right now given his dominance in the O. If Hunter's moved, it'll be in a package for a long-term, more consistent player compared to Novak.

I think you are both underestimating the cost for the best RHD available at the deadline.

Idea would be to re-sign Novak around 4M-5M.

It's a buyer's market this year. Very few teams have the cap space to add a player with a $4.5M cap hit and Calgary doesn't like to retain salary.

Defintely it could be more. Not much more though. I still don't like the Canucks trading a 1st for a rental.

That makes it 10x worse. Novak is not a player the Canucks should be going after, certainly not spending Brzustewicz on.
