If we're paying a 1st tanev is getting retained on.
If we're only getting a 1st toffoli isn't getting retained on
Fleury has been really bad this year

Fleury has a 2.97 GAA and .897 save %. That’s MILES better than what Vanecek is giving us. Personally, I don’t understand why Vanecek hasn’t been placed on waivers yet. In all seriousness, I’d rather waive Vanecek and call up Keith Kinkaid

Valid points on the retention though

With such high performance bonuses, I don’t think we enter LTIR unless we are adding a real difference make with term. I don’t think we do it for rentals.

Just because Vanacek has been horrific doesn’t mean Fleury is valuable

I’d point out the fleury has been worse than Schmid and Daws. And is likely to get worse as the wear and tear of a season goes on

So we’re just gonna do nothing at the deadline because we’re worried about overages next year? Vegas, Tampa and pretty much all teams that have made deep playoff runs worry about cap when the offseason hits. Both these moves make the team better today and probably solidify us a playoff spot. When fully healthy, and now adding Tanev and Fleury, there’s no reason our initial aspirations can’t be met. You just gotta get in. Tanev is also not a guaranteed rental especially if we can get him on something like 2x4.5

What I’m saying is that Fleury would be a cheap upgrade over Vanecek. Most experience as well. Him and Daws can split games the rest of the year

If the cheap cost is Vitek+3rd for Fleury. Sure.

If we're keeping Vitek on the books, no

The difference is, those teams didn’t have four+ high picks on ELCs earning large bonuses. We have Hughes, Holtz, Mercer, Nemec (and Daws, Schmid). Most of their lineups were SPCs (no performance bonus allowed unless coming off major injury). So they did not have to manage around a big carryover number. We do.

It’s not an easy decision…but I think we go one of two routes: (1) find cheap rentals and avoid 2024-25 cap impact; (2) find difference makers with term and accept the carryover. There are probably creative third options (such has using 2023/24 cap space to buy down some 2024/25 cap to cancel out the bonus carryover). But either way, I think high AAV rentals are probably the least likely route unless we are extending them.

If these are the options, Vancouver will take Tanev for our 1st, not Toffoli.

Fair enough. I've seen VAN fans constantly making trades for Toffoli and this would be the asking price, if not more, for Toffoli half retained

Tanev isn't worth a 1st, too injury prone

I agree it's a fair asking price, just not 100% sure that's what Vancouver will spend their 2024 1st, unless by process of elimination, it's their best avenue to improve for a playoff run

We have fond memories of him, sort of like an ex-girlfriend that things ended in a way with no closure.

I don't disagree, although you roll the dice for the playoffs.
