2C Challenge Pt 3

Created by: HockeyManiac95
Team: 2023-24 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 18, 2024
Published: Jan. 18, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is part 3 of my 2C challenge for the Colorado Avalanche. Last time we covered options from the Arizona Coyotes. This time we're doing the Buffalo Sabres. As I said last time, I'm skipping the Boston Bruins because they are a certain playoff team and won't be helping the Avs at all. Let's get started.

The center options here are Tage Thompson, Casey Mittelstadt, Dylan Cozens, and Peyton Krebs.

This one has been talked about a lot, and it's an easy answer. Thompson and Cozens are staying put, and Krebs is not a 2C. All we have is Casey Mittelstadt. For the fun of it, his numbers are good. 38 points in 44 games and about 18 min TOI. His defense is OK and his face off percentage is pretty good. He's only 24 years old and with a cap hit of $2.5M. Things can only go up for him. Knowing that, it is going to be hard to pry him out of Buffalo, especially if this team seriously wants to make the playoffs. Would probably need to be an overpay to get this one done, so I'm going to leave this trade blank and ask the Sabres fans what Mittelstadt is worth to you. Thanks for reading!

This is a healthy post TDL roster assuming the only assets traded for Mittelstadt are prospects and picks (probably not the case, but who knows?).
Trades
1.
COL
    FCs, 7th round pick, whatever.
    WPG
    1. Johansen, Ryan
    Additional Details:
Anywhere. Certainly won't be Winnipeg. If a team wants payment for taking him, a 5th is as high as I'd go for a 30 point guy.
    2.
    BUF
Sabes fans, what gets it done? And is he even available?

Don't think we make very good trade partners actually.

I actually agree but since the challenge is to pick a 2C from each team (outside of the team's listed in pt 2), I did it anyway.

The only piece BUF would be looking for is a defender and the only defender that makes sense is Toews.

      Mitts <> Toews.

I say it depends on what they’re looking at him long term? Is he 3 C , who can play wing in the top 6, yeah. Are you going to pay that spot more than 5-5.5? I say no, when you have your top 2 Cs, and more C prospects coming. If the money starts to get north of 6 million, I think you trade him for a top 4 D or a 1rst.

Not sure why anyone would label him as a 3C.

That’s what he is for Buffalo. Do you think he’s going to stay as a top 6 wing, that can’t score 20 goals, when u have Kulich, and pay mitts 6 million? No way.

      Points (1st on the team)
5v5 Points (1st on the team)
Faceoff wins (1st on the team)
      5v5 ATOI (1st among Fs)
      Assists (1st on the team)

Which part of that screams 3C for BUF?

I mean he's playing a full 1 minute more ATOI 5v5 time than the next forward on the team (Tuch).

Kulich isn't even NHL ready. Trading your leader in points for a 1st round pick, that you then need to wait 5 years for maybe getting close to Mitts' production is a great way to start another rebuild. $6mm would be a steal. Try $7.1mm.

How many points? If everyone was/is healthy, he’s a 3 C. Tell me who’s moving down?

If they give him that, they will regret that. No 3 C is worth that, and we have C in spades.

Put it this way, are you paying a top 6 F 7 mill who gets 50-60 points max and less than 20 goals? Ok

This year is his ceiling, and what place are we? He’s a 5 million player max, and they can go younger and cheaper. Signing him more than that would be a typical Buffalo overpay.

He is just entering his prime. Going younger is a good way to ensure more losing. The typical Buffalo way is to develop players, then trade them in their prime.

Yeah thats fine, why wouldn't it be? Also another thing to consider is if one of Tage or Cozens gets hurt you've got a guy who can step in, having a capable center fill in is huge to have in the lineup.

I’m not anti Mitts, but it’s the cost. If they have a number fine, but I wouldn’t chase it , if it starts getting what you’re already paying Tage and Cozens.

      5v5 points leaders since Dec. 9 2022:

      1. MacKinnon
      2. McDavid
      3. Pasta
      4. Point
      5. Kucherov
      6. Rantanen
      7. Petterson
      8. Mitts

But, sure he's only worth $5mm and easily replaceable...

Not true. He's led all forwards in 5v5 ATOI all season, even before Tage went down against BOS.

I’m telling you, if you don’t/can’t score 25 goals, you’re not worth 7 million. You guys will be b**in, why’d we sign him to that contract in 2 years.
