The problem is, with being light, they need to off set the salary and Kakko is the best way to do it. They wouldn’t trade Laf in this deal imo. It can’t be Lindgren because Schneider is already in it (who is the main piece I thought Toronto would love to have). So the options are limited. Further more Rangers wouldn’t trade anything else in this
, ie- Othmann or Perrault or even Sykora because then it’s a bad trade for them. Perhaps another pick, not a prospect
I don't understand how that is a bad trade, though. It maybe makes it not a fleece or more even, but not "bad". Winning a trade is great, and fleecing is even better, but it shouldn't be expected. Marner is a legit superstar that puts up 100+ points a season, is in his prime, and has been nominated for the Selke multiple times. I guess maybe if you are looking at this as purely a rental until the end of next season, then yeah, this should do. But I doubt TOR is gonna sell him that way while he still has term, even if only one year, and plenty of time to negotiate.
Kakko and Schneider are both interesting young players, but I don't think they are worth what you think they are. And I'm sorry, that sucks, Kakko was a 2nd overall pick, but that was a long time ago and he is a borderline bust at this point. Then you have TOR retaining 50% AND you are asking them to take on a large salary dump, with only Schneider, Kakko and a late 1st as compensation? I think this would be leaving quite a bit of value on the table for TOR up front, and it has a lot of potential to be an absolute fleece for the Rangers in hindsight.
