Vancouver is looking for a top 6 centre not a winger.

Devils decline. Too soon to say if we will be buyers, we can't extend Hanifin, and Markstrom without retention is not an option.

No disrespect but he plays wing and center very well.I think this trade would be awesome for us.Just my opinion.

Better trade that other recent ones to NJD, but unlikely we'd do that.

Jets Accept on the condition the 2nd is the ‘25 2nd and not the MTL 2nd, and that Lindholm has to play at least 80% of the playoff games and get at least 10 pts

The reason for this trade idea is that the Leafs don't have the pieces to make a trade that makes sense for both parties. A second and another pick seems to be the conversation, but the Leafs don't have those picks! It becomes an issue of the Leafs needing an improvement there, and probably don't see a trade that improves them as much as this one for that first rounder.

Markstrom with retention is not an option, so Markstrom to the Devils at all is not an option, apparently! The Flames owners have made clear they do not retain salary, but apparently are willing to this year for their expiring players. I can't imagine them changing it to allow a multi year retention.

Leafs won’t use a first rounder for tanev if that’s the cost lol best you get out of us is niemela a 3rd and abruzzese flames 5th and Vancouver 5th as the brad tax if you want more we’ll look elsewhere don’t need him fully retained either

Then be willing to take very little for Markstrom because that contract is hefty

I was genuinely trying to make it fit. It breaks down into two trades in my mind. A player and a pick for Markstrom, and a first for Hanifan. The retention on Hanifan means the Markstrom trade gets upgraded a little, so the Devils can still make another move. It just so happens that the goalie and the defenceman the Devils need are on the same team. With Hamilton coming back next year, Hanifan might be deemed expendable, or might not, but there are some options there. Is your objection the cost or the pieces?

This doesn't stand in the way of that, to be honest. Greer has been surprisingly effective for the Flames, but his age means he is taking the place of a younger player for the Flames. This seems like a win/win, where the Canucks get depth for their fairly unexpected run at a low cost, and the Flames get an asset for a player that fell into their lap. The Canucks can still go fishing for the top six centre.

6 million a year for two more years? When the cap is going up? For a number 1 goalie? No disrespect, but that is absolutely not a hefty contract.

For a 34 year old goalie on a deal that takes him until he’s 36 it is very much a hefty contract.

I like Hanifin as potential target, but our best option may be trying for him over summer when/if he hits UFA. We have tons of injuries and our record shows it. If we take took much cap this year , we will be forced into using LTIR which has implications on our cap next year (we have a bunch of performing ELCs that are likely to earn bonus money). Holtz is on verge of real breakout...he has been our top scorer per-60 in 5v5, but just hasn't really gotten much ice time. It would take a lot to obtain him.

I think the max we would do for Hanifin, assuming we felt we had good chance of extending him, would fall into this range:

-- Hanifin (100%) -- 2024 1st round pick*
-- Hanifin (100%) -- Kevin Bahl, 2025 2nd round pick
-- Hanifin (50%) -- 2024 1st round pick*, 2025 3rd round pick
-- Hanifin (50%) -- Kevin Bahl, 2025 2nd round pick, 2024 3rd round pick
-- Hanifin (50%) -- 2024 1st round pick*, Topias Vilen or Daniil Misyul

(* top-10 protected, if we make ECF, turns into top-10 protected 2025 1st round pick)

I think the comps for Hanifin would be
-- Hampus Lindholm (2022) -- minus the salary dumps, so roughly Vaakanainen plus 1st (Moore+retention=two 2nds)
-- Ben Chiarot (2022) -- minus the retention, so roughly Smilanic plus 1st
-- Brenden Dillon (2020) -- two 2nds
-- Justin Faulk (2019) -- Edmundson, Bokk, 7th (with 5th)
-- Tomas Kaberle (2011) - 1st, 2nd, lesser prospect

For a Hanifin/Markstrom combo comp...maybe start with this trade and build from there
-- LAK got: Korpisalo, Gavrikov
-- CBJ got: Quick, 1st, 2nd

As for Markstrom, it doesn't sound like he will be a trade option, so no point in creating a ton of options...but I would imagine it would look a little like Mike Smith 2017 trade.
-- CGY Got: Mike Smith, 25% retained ($1.4m off $5.7m), 2 years remained
-- ARI Got: Chad Johnson (1 full year remained at $2.5m), Brandon Hickey, conditional 3rd that became 2nd of CGY reached playoffs

That would look something like
-- NJD gets: Jacob Markstrom, 25% retained ($1.5m off $6m)
-- CGY gets: Vitek Vanecek, Charlie Leddy, 2024 3rd round pick (that becomes 20205 2nd if Devils reach playoffs)

So Hanifin / Markstrom together...so around
-- NJD gets: Markstrom (25%), Hannifin (50%)
-- CGY gets: Bahl, Vanecek, Leddy, 1st, 3rd

(Ballpark)
