Pens Buy and Sell at TDL

Created by: LC_Colorado
Team: 2023-24 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 23, 2024
Published: Jan. 23, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
1.
PIT
  1. Kuzmenko, Andrei
  2. Räty, Aatu
  3. 2024 1st round pick (VAN)
Additional Details:
Pens get a good Center prospect (they need those) and a 1st (since they’re most likely not getting their own back)
VAN
  1. Guentzel, Jake
Additional Details:
As much as I want Guentzel to stay a Penguin, we may have to trade him. After Willy Nylander signed that $11.5M AAV extension, Guentzel is probably going to want something high like that. At least here Pens can get some kind of haul for Guentz while they still have him.
2.
PIT
  1. Hanifin, Noah
Additional Details:
Pens need a Top Pairing LD. Dubas brought in Graves in free agency to be the big and tall dman that we need on our top pair. However, this has shown to not work that well. Graves doesn’t really fit anywhere on our pairings, so it’s time we let him go.

I suggested this trade a while back too and people didn’t really hate it. I find it to be a good trade. However, Pens do also have to retain $1.5M on Graves which will bite into their dead cap for 6 years (because I doubt that either A. Anybody wants him or B. Anyone wants to retain $1.5M for 6 years straight).

Also Pens can add a 4th for retention
CGY
  1. Graves, Ryan ($1,500,000 retained)
  2. Joseph, Pierre-Olivier
  3. 2026 1st round pick (PIT)
3.
PIT
  1. 2024 3rd round pick (NJD)
NJD
  1. Smith, Reilly
Additional Details:

4.
PIT
  1. 2024 6th round pick (VGK)
VGK
  1. Harkins, Jansen
Additional Details:

What would his cost be? (That being if Carolina wants to trade him)

      No on Lyubushkin
Pens and CGY decline (Flames can get better deal, pens aren't going to retain for 5 seasons).
NJD also probably declines, feel like they need more on the blue line/in net.

So basically the Pens are in a selloff here, Yet they trade for Noah Hanifin. Yeah i seriously doubt that.

      Canucks pass.
      Dubas isnt interested in Kuzmenko.
He rather keep Guentzel than trade him.

"It’s time we let him go"?!?!? Ryan Graves hasn't played 45 games for you yet. He's third on your team in plus-minus (among defenders) and fourth in ice time. What did you expect from a guy who's new to the organization? And what if Noah Hanifin decides to go elsewhere next July? Then instead of having Ryan Graves for 5 more seasons as part of your top 4, you have a Ryan-Graves-sized hole that has to be re-filled, the cost of which is going to be increased by $1.5 million per season because of the retention. Meanwhile, you've also given up your 2024 first, which could be as early as 12th overall. And what's the basis for thinking that Hanifin is going to mesh better with the team in 35 games under fire than Graves has in 44 plus all of training camp?

Personally, as a completely disinterested outsider, this seems like a short-sighted and risky approach and highly likely to be a disastrously losing strategy.

You could have had a "dug your own grave" pun in there with the retention....

      Missed opportunities

Looks fair price for Guentzel. I kind of hope Canucks don't do that - but it looks in the realm of possibilities.
