Six million in cap space with Dougie finally placed on LTIR

Created by: NHLfan10506

Initial Creation Date: Jan. 25, 2024

Description
Dougie is out until probably May with torn pec. Devils had been holding out on putting him on LTIR as we wanted to accrue some cap space to avoid a big bonus carryover (the downside of having a bunch of good ELCs on roster). But it’s done…Dougie is on LTIR…so this opens up a lot of doors for us now.

Who are the best players we could buy with cap space alone?

If it were simply a goaltending problem, we would see a drop in saves on all shots against. Medium and low danger save percentage would drop. Soft goals would be going in…like they did in 2021-22.

Not necessarily. Goalies have different levels in ability throughout the entire spectrum of potential scoring chances one may face.
Again, Allen's and Kähkönen's statistical profiles seem to suggest that they'd provide a value add for this Devils team given their relatively higher proficiency in stopping high danger / rush chances against compared to our starting goalie going into this season...

If the solution is to play high-risk, high-event hockey…we would want a rock solid goalie.

I think the plan should be playing possession, transition hockey…high quality for, low quality against (like last year).

Goaltending is a long term hole to fix…but I think our options will be better in off-season.

With McLeod and Foote, do they still count against the cap cuz they are on the NHL non-roster (Or whatver it’s called) or no??

They count on against cap and against # of contracts…but not on roster limits. So same as regular IR.

One would assume that Fitz only did this in preparation for a trade that was presumably all but finalized.

Goalie: Gibson/Markstrom
Center depth: Lindholm/Henrique
Good left defense, tons potentially available from fringe playoff teams, but unknown as of yet.

I think defense will be the focus…I am guessing it’s we will spend some assets to address.

We have plenty of centers already on roster…Jack, Nico, Mercer, Haula, Lazar, Tierney…so I don’t think we would spend a lot on adding a 3C or 4C. Maybe we snag Bonino off waivers or similar move.

Goalies will be off-season fix.

I don't think this move indicates any trade in the next few days. I think Dougie got moved today because Devils were against the cap and now that McLeod and Foote are out (they still count against the cap), Devils needed to call up a few more players, leading to us not being cap compliant.

So I think this was just a move done now so they were back under the cap after having to call up some extra Utica players and claiming Nick Desimone. (Sorry if someone already said this point, haven't read all the comments yet).

Yes, that was definitely the reasoning behind the timing. But they easily could have but Siegenthaler (6-8 weeks broken foot) or Hughes (wrist) on LTIR. And now that he is there (likely until May)…we can add.

If we went this route as a strategy…accepting higher event hockey…and consciously putting more in the hands of a goaltender, let’s go out and get the best one that could be available: Spencer Knight.

2021-22 thru 2023-24, even strength, HD sv%

1. Spencer Knight .870

2. Ilya Sorokin .858
4. Igor Shesterkin .856
6. Linus Ullmark .853

7. Thatcher Demo .846
9. Sergei Bobrovsky .844
10. Andrei Vasilevskiy .842

16. Connor Hellebuyck .837
17. Juuse Saros .837
18. Jake Oettinger .837
21. Jacob Markstrom .834
24. John Gibson .830

45. Alex Nedeljkovic .817
48. Kevin Lankinen .810
49. Elvis Merzlikins .809
58. Jake Allen .798
60. Vitek Vanecek .797

Also…he is one of the best puck handlers at the position. We have seen how useful Daws puck handling has been to our defense…Knight would really help puck control issues.

Knight and Hanifin are probably the two guys I’d want the most if anyone/everyone becomes available.
