A Few Possibilities 2024 TDL

Created by: Sprak
Team: 2023-24 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 27, 2024
Published: Jan. 27, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
a light, depth-piece sell-off in preparation for the arrival of Ryan Leonard.
Trades
1.
WSH
  1. 2024 1st round pick (NYR)
Additional Details:
Arguably the best 4C in the league and a top 10 defensive center in the NHL. With the center depth trouble that New York has with the injury of Chytl and subpar seasons from Goodrow and Bonino, Dowd would be a welcome addition to the NYR roster.

Other suitable teams: Toronto, Edmonton, Detroit (Basically any team in a lower Playoff Position by the TDL)
2.
WSH
  1. 2024 4th round pick (ARI)
  2. 2025 3rd round pick (ARI)
Additional Details:
Arizona, Blues, and Nashville fit this Description

A 4th for Kuzy a 3.9M

A 3rd for 1.5 years of retention.
ARI
  1. Kuznetsov, Evgeny ($3,900,000 retained)
Additional Details:
I can see a Fringe Playoff Team (With lots of Cap space) using Kuzy as a PKer (The only thing he seems to be elite at anymore)
3.
WSH
  1. 2024 1st round pick (CAR)
Additional Details:
A perfect scoring depth piece for a team making a cup/playoff push as he seems to have refound his scoring touch.

Possible Suitors: Carolina, Arizona, Nashville, Detroit (maybe not), for just futures

A player coming back: Most playoff teams
CAR
  1. Mantha, Anthony ($2,850,000 retained)
4.
WSH
  1. 2024 3rd round pick (PHI)
  2. 2025 7th round pick (PHI)
Additional Details:
Philly just seemed like that kind of team TBH
5.
WSH
  1. 2024 7th round pick (NSH)
Additional Details:
I don't think he's worth anything in a trade, but maybe?

seeing as other (worse) 4th line centers have gotten more in return at a higher cap hit, I don't like your odds. Also term increases his value, he's not a rental

They need a 3C, not a 4C. So that 1st is going for Monahan or Lindholm, etc.

Then the caps go to the other teams listed in the description of the trade for a similar return

What worse 4th line centres have been traded in the past 10 years for a 1st round pick or higher?

I would love to hear this.

I would be surprised if he got more than a 3rd round pick.

I disagree, without retention that might be true, but 50% retention puts Mantha's value into low 1st round territory. It would allow the canes enough space for call-ups or even another trade ifneed be.

I think a 2nd round pick would be the high end for Mantha. His value has gone up because he is having a good year. I would be shocked if someone threw out a 1st for him though.

I'll correct myself and say 4th line players

Not a center, but Tampa gave up 2 1sts for Tanner Jeannot, who was at a worse point pace that season than Dowd is right now. Also, Dowd is a top 10 defensive center in the league, he would be in the selke conversation every year if the media did only vote for players that put up points as well.

I too will eat my own feces if Washington is able to con another franchise into giving them a first round pick for just Dowd. No retention? No auxiliary pieces? An unretained Dowd is fetching a second round pick, maybe a throwaway prospect could be included, but nothing more. The market for #4C's usually hovers around a 4th to 5th round pick: double that value and you can account for Dowd's term.

Consider the types of players that get moved for first round picks, the teams willing to part with their draft capital, and what their true wants and needs are. There isn't a team in the league set enough to spend a first round pick on a #4C. Madness.

Jeannot was a trade that 100% of fans of all teams agreed was absolutely terrible. It was a unanimous WTF moment. Referencing that trade to justify anything is not advised.

Jeannot also scored 24 goals the year before, was 800k cap, was 25 and was an RFA. He also is a league leader in hits. He is just a nasty winger.

I can understand a 1 x 1st for him at the time. But a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th + prospect (low end value one though), was WILD. I personally would not have paid the 1st though.

So if you can conn Tampa again, go for it. But don't count on it.

Dowd will be desireable but he will not get a 1st.

A 1st for mantha? No.

Add in the canes don’t do more than 3rds and fringe prospects for rentals. Mantha doesn’t come close to making the canes change that philosophy.

Then one of the other teams I mentioned in the trade does something comparable.

Rangers don't even consider that nonsense trade. Dowd doesn't get anywhere near a 1st round pick....from any team.
