Pens decline. If Pit is taking Kuzmenko back to make the cap work Van would have to pay a legitimate price.

There's no way buffalo touches that. The Sabres have been trying to build a cohesive unit that plays for each other, and shed some of the bad reputation. Obviously results are mixed at best, but trading mittelstadt for a late first wouldn't fit any kind of narrative. Trading him for a defenseman that would help complete the puzzle, that makes sense. Plus, he's an rfa, there's no urgency at all, except to find a defensive right shot d.
