Embrace the Future

Created by: Marked_Difference
Team: 2023-24 Arizona Coyotes
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 31, 2024
Published: Jan. 31, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I don't know what is happening with the Yotes and their forever home. Speculate if you want but I am focusing on what is happening on the ice and in the future that Bill Armstrong has been building.

There is a ton of talent in the wings and so much draft potential that it is likely another diamond or two will be added. Right now AZ can continue to build and maybe play meaningful games at the end of the season. Might even compete for a playoff spot. Seeing playoff hockey in Mullett arena would be something special.

Both Kakko and Jiricek have been in the news cycles...

We aren’t trading Jiricek. But even if we did, this ain’t it.

Cool. Let us know when you're ready to ship us a 1RD of the future, and we can talk. Otherwise we'll just keep ours. We've got plenty of picks, 2-3RHD, and middle-6 forwards already.

I think there is a difference between what fans want and what management is looking for. The Jackets coaching and Management has mistreated Jiricek, which lead to Jiricek publicly criticizing Columbus management, so it wouldn't be too surprising if they actually did move him. I know fans rightfully don't want him traded but you have to realize it actually is a possibility. Jackets management and development has been quite bad this past little while so I don't think they deserve the benefit of the doubt.

Recent history (this year recent history) shows that they DON'T trade players that complain about ice time, we're not just pulling it out of our a** based on what we think. Elvis requested a trade, they tested the market, it was soft, so they just played him more. He's responded well and got a shutout last night. Chinakhov requested a trade due to playtime earlier this year, he proved he deserves it, and has been one of our best forwards recently. Both have since rescinded their trade requests.

I know from an outside perspective it looks like things are a mess (and they are, management needs to go), but the the things management and specifically Jarmo has proven time and time again are that 1) he's going to be a harda** on young players, either with scratches, demotions, or RFA negotiations, and 2) he doesn't make trades for the sake of moving out a dissatisfied player for pennies on the dollar.

Like, sure, they have mistreated Jiricek (get in line, him and who else this year?) and a trade is a possibility. But recent evidence suggests the exact opposite.

Would easily make this trade from a Coyotes perspective. Columbus would be a hard no. I believe in order to Columbus to move Jiricek, it will be the type of deal that Anaheim and Philadelphia made. I feel we would have to move one of Geekie, But, Guenther in order to get Jiricek. Don't see Columbus taking B level prospects when shipping out a 20 year old future first pair RHD.

With Elvis the reason he wasn't traded is because he's just been bad, I love him but he's been bad. At his cap hit, term and play no team is willing to give assets to get that . With Chinakov they definitely did hold with him for sure and that's worked out for them. Also for Jarmo & management I 100% agree have been a hardasses on young players but it seems like ****es. Fantilli was playing as one of their better forwards and they put him to 4th line left wing for a bit, and when you're a rebuilding team there is no reason to not have Jiricek up, the season is lost it is time to get him used to NHL play. Also I think the Jiricek one is a little different than the other situations (Elvis/Chinakov) as they just requested out but Jiricek actually publicly criticized management. I could be wrong about everything, you definitely know more about the Jackets than me, but to me this situation just feels different. I feel like Jiricek can get you a lot more than Elvis or Chinakov would and to me it just seems like Jarmo isn't prioritizing Jiricek long term.

I agree with you on most of this, and a lot of it does come down to mismanagement of younger players, but:

He hasn't been bad this year, though, by any measure. He's been average...like astonishingly on-average (0.3 GSAx, exactly 0.000 SV% above expected, and a .903 SV% overall where league average is .904). He's not a $5.4M goalie, so yes no one is taking him, but he's a perfectly fine backup at the very least.

It's different, but also not even as dire as Elvis or Chinakhov. The problem is management promised him an NHL position explicitly at the start of the year, then scratched him for like a month+ straight, then sent him back to the AHL. When he criticized them, their response was "where did this come from?" like they had no idea, and said he needs to play, but in the AHL. It's just all in line with how they mismanage young guys and jerk them around, and screw with long-term development. They have to go, and Jiricek is 100% right.

But that doesn't mean that this management crew is going to trade him (because they historically don't), and it certainly doesn't mean the next management crew has to trade him (since his beef is with this crew, and his complaints are just ice time/NHL spots).

I guess I was harsh on Merzlikins and he has actually been decent, but still with his contract no team is gonna give up assets to get him. I 100% think with this current goalie market if any team was actually interested they would have traded him, so it's not just like Jarmo held on to him he had too.

I think the management's response might actually make it more dire. Them acting clueless after disrespecting one of their future stars probably made Jiricek even more mad, and even if he hasn't made a trade request yet this is probably moving towards one. If he doesn't believe in management he won't believe in what they're building he might not want to stay. I know it may seem minor now but I feel like this could build a divide between Jarmo and him, especially next summer when they start talking extensions. If jarmo is a hardass is negotiations I feel like that will further piss off Jiricek.

It's probably a little early to trade him now but if Jarmo stays I feel like at some point they might need to choose between him and Jarmo

I think this is a valid assessment, but if that's the case you clearly pick the player. Otherwise, you disrespect a whole fanbase by doubling down on a guy who's greatest success in 10 years is a single playoff round victory. I'm assuming Jarmo is gone, possibly over All-Star break, but my own wishes probably cloud my judgement.
