I would not trade Marner straight up for that. Frederic is just a guy. Better to just keep Gregor than pay way more for a guy that doesn't give you anything extra. Swayman is a FA who's price is only going up and the Leafs have cheap young goalies already. They don't need a huge expensive one they would need to work out a deal with. And Carlo is not a top 2 D-man. He is a 3-4. And, as the only useful piece in the deal, he certainly isn't worth Marner

Don't think you've seen Trent Frederic play this year. Back to back years taking a major step, playing the kind of physical game that every team wants to, and has 21 points in his last 29 games after a pretty slow start. I get it, not a sexy name, but he's turning heads in boston. Not for nothing, he'd be fourth on the leafs in goals. he's better than knies at this juncture.
Swayman is an RFA, not a UFA. He also is in the discussion for the best goalie in the league at this moment.
Carlo has been a top 2 d man for boston this year, and I think we can agree that boston's blue line is a smidge better than the leafs.

this trade is very lopsided.

I know who they all are. A third line FWD who is big and strong but too expensive to fit in the Leafs cap structure and not high value. Could be found every year in FA. I very good goalie on an expiring contract who will want big money, being offered to a team with 3 stud goalies in their system that as cost controlled for years and years without needing to get significant dollars (makes a lot of sense to do that on cap strapped team doesn't it?) And a D man, who although valuable to the Leafs, is not worth trading Marner for. 2 out of the 3 pieces are detrimental to the Leafs moving forward. Only 1 is useful, and he isn't worth Marner on his own. Its pretty simple. You are looking at the players as you see them. Not as the Leafs would see them.
