Would cost the devils $1.5mm against the cap next year, and $1mm against the cap the year after that. So the question is what’s $2.5mm in cap space worth to your GM in a trade.
If it’s nothing, then it’s nothing.
As a fan, I’d rather have the cap space, and to be able to add to the team, to make a long playoff run. But people can think otherwise, no issues there.

It's not worth a 2nd+. Especially with cap going up. It's not a matter of dealing with MTL or no one either.

Rangers were in on both Lindholm and Monahan but didn’t want to give up their first round pick.
I wouldn’t be overly concerned about “rental”, the Rangers have never had a problem getting players they wanted to keep to re-sign.

I mean the 2025 1st is probably more in play. I mean either way I’d rather Kakko than Ylonen for the 3rd line and then hope to get a 3C and 1RW

I’d say a 3rd for just the Vanacek part is fair. Primeau is why I upgraded the trade to a 2nd. A third and a fourth wouldn’t be an unreasonable ask though. Hard to know what value Primeau has around the league right now, but I think he’s gonna be good.

I think you go for a rental 3rd like RW. Rental wingers are typically abundant and don’t cost much in trade at the deadline. Way more scarcity in centers and D. Habs can retain half his salary if you need it, or for sure other teams could as well. Do you have anyone whose salary you want to dump?

You can sign UFAs. Rebuild the draft. The same way you did with Crosby, Malkin, Fleury, etc.

yes but that isn't selling tickets NOW.
You are basically saying. Hey....trade that pile of money away because you're going to be rebuilding sometime.

They will never trade Crosby because of what it means to the teams bottom line. As long as he's there they will sell merchandise and tickets.
When he's gone..... they will be back to the old penguins who were threating to move because they were in the red.

-I don't see any reason for the Devils to do this - Primeau isn't really any sort of upgrade in goal for them, he's just a little cheaper than Vanecek. If the cap space is an issue, they can buy Vanecek out and clear some space, and then potentially use those picks to get a better tandem goalie than Primeau to upgrade that spot.

-Feels like fair value but probably doesn't happen for a while with Laine in the assistance program. But I could definitely see the Jackets trying to clear the decks, especially if Jarmo gets fired at some point in the near future. Letang is slowing down a -little- but is still the clear #1 on the roster you've put together here. And you're sending back basically three cap dumps - Vanecek would be an expensive backup behind Tristan Jarry, and Armia & Dvorak are $7.6M worth of bottom-6 forwards at this point. Four 1st rounders is a lot, but honestly think it's still not enough here.

-I think the Rangers pass. I can't see them settling for what's likely a late 2nd rounder and Ylonen as a return for Kakko, even if Kakko isn't living up to his draft pedigree.

-I get the idea, but there's just no way Crosby plays anywhere but PIttsburgh before the end of his career. And honestly, this is pretty horrible value - Crosby at 36 is still a first line center and there's no reason to think he wouldn't be next year.

Primeau is not interesting at all. He hasn't shown much of anything. No different than Daws, at latest Schmid had a good playoff round.

Primeau would be the backup (for now) that the Devils work to develop into a starter for the long term.

I’d be fine with the Winnipeg 1st for Kakko as well. If they want Ylonen too though, I wouldn’t go higher than a 2nd. It could be our 2025 2nd if they prefer.

It’s 100% up to Sid what he wants to do. One year before UFA. Pens would move him if he asks. 100%. If ever he came to Montreal, his childhood team? He’d be God over here. If ever he brought us cup #25? Potential GOAT status.

What the return is, the return is. I was more curious what the team would look like with him. Price’s knee would probably be fine for one final kick at the can. Cap doesn’t count in the playoffs.

yeah no, it really doesn't work that way.

He'll resign in PIT and he'll retire there.

Right now the rangers don’t need anything but top line RW

Brodzinski is fine as 3C and Kakko knows his role there

Tarasenko at half salary then. Has a full NTC, he can pick his destination.

I agree fully that the Rangers are looking to win now. But Dolan seemingly doesn’t want to move his 1st round pick.
If you acquire the Winnipeg pick from us, then that can immediately be flipped for someone who can help you now.

my point really was that they aren't going to trade kakko for a 1st if that 1st isn't already flipped (basically a 3 team trade). This happened when NYR traded Buch (Drurys worst move) in the hopes they could parlay into Eichel. They lost out on Eichel and lost buch for pennies on the dollar because of it. Which ironically is why they are in the place they are now with needing help in the top 6
