What I would do

Created by: DogDayCaps2
Team: 2023-24 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 7, 2024
Published: Feb. 7, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Capitals ideally drop into bottom 5 and draft Demidov or one of the high end D men
Trades
1.
WSH
  1. Yevseyev, Nikita [Reserve List]
  2. 2024 2nd round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
2nd + mid level prospect. People are hoping for more and that would be great but I’m okay w this.
2.
WSH
  1. Carter, Jeff
  2. 2024 2nd round pick (PIT)
  3. 2025 4th round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
Add depth to a weaker bottom 6. Doesn’t have to be Pittsburgh but they’ll likely make a move to try to make playoffs
PIT
3.
WSH
  1. Niemelä, Topi
  2. Robertson, Nicholas
Additional Details:
Leafs get 2 draft picks to try to add more depth for a playoff run. TVR is a solid option especially at 1.5m for the next 2.5 years
TOR
  1. van Riemsdyk, Trevor ($1,500,000 retained)
  2. 2024 2nd round pick (EDM)
  3. 2025 2nd round pick (WSH)
4.
WSH
  1. 2024 3rd round pick (CAR)
Additional Details:
Optimistically a 3rd. I’d do a 4th. Doesn’t really matter just gaining picks at this point and trying to send him somewhere he’s comfortable and will have a chance at a cup
CAR
  1. Pacioretty, Max
Additional Details:
Capitals pay the 2m bonus.
5.
WSH
  1. Kaliyev, Arthur
Additional Details:
Kings gain a pick to help add depth at the deadline or to draft. IMO they can flip the 2nd for a bottom 6 gritty winger
LAK
  1. 2024 2nd round pick (PIT)
6.
WSH
  1. Brännström, Erik
Additional Details:
Doesn’t need to happen till offseason but imo Jensen at 2m = a 3rd +. Brannstrom = 3rd. Seems like a solid 1 for 1
OTT
  1. Jensen, Nick ($2,000,000 retained)
7.
WSH
  1. 2026 3rd round pick (NYR)
Additional Details:
Could be anywhere. Apparently teams are looking into him
8.
WSH
  1. 2025 3rd round pick (COL)

Kings would love to have Lindgren. 1-for-1 swap for Kaliyev would probably work.

I'd do that deal from Ottawa's perspective.

Probably not. Maybe Washington agrees to ship him to a contender? If possible

I proposed it the other day and a lot of Caps fans said the Kings would need to add, which I don't agree with. I do think a 1-for-1 swap would work.

Carter negotiated his NMC so he wouldn't have to move his family.

He'll simply play out the season and then retire.

Capital fans are glorifying some of the players available.

I would take the Patches deal... I think 2.0 with the Canes would work a whole lot better than 1.0

Pit will not help you at the cost of their own rebuild.
We started on the bottom together....and we will return to the bottom together LOL

Idk if they can realistically rebuild. Crosby looks way too good still and they just traded for EK. I think they have no choice but to go all in.

WSH isn't rebuilding yet either but have no worry, they will both be picking top 5 again together really soon.

They are retooling imo. They have some solid prospects. They are just missing 1-2 high end talents. This draft should fill one of those slots.

I agree completely. But I think they would be more inclined to pull the trigger on that Dowd deal rather than getting NAK and Mantha.

Yup, but if he would, I'd totally make this move.

"retool" and "rebuild" are two different things. WSH is headed for a total rebuild. They aren't their yet but they will be. Nothing they have on the roster in their youth is anything but a support piece.
Their is no younger core there. At some point here really soon they will be rebuilding. PIT will be right there with them soon enough.

Capitals are missing top line center but I strongly disagree

Leonard is elite. Cristall is trending towards top 6 / elite
McM 2/3c. Protas middle 6. Miro middle 6. Suzdalev middle 6. Lappy bottom 6.

MF Sandin Iorio Chesley top 4.

Strome is 26. Signed for a while.

Capitals draft Demidov or one of those D men they are retooled and just need a 1c.

Penguins literally have nothing in the pipe. Their best prospect is what Yager ? Cristall is A LOT better. Penguins need to rebuild. Washington can retool quickly.

While I agree the penguins pipeline is sparse with only 3-4 guys in it that have NHL caliber.

WSH is not much better. I think you are over rating them. Leonard, has a lot of help around him like Cutter and about 4-5 other pro draft picks. Take those kinds of talent advantages away and what do you get? He's not even the best guy on his team so elite is pushing it.

As far as Cristal, he's racked up points in the WHL. But that's a huge jump to the pro level to start claiming he's "elite".

Lots of hopes and dreams on that prospect pool. People use to talk the same way about Lappy and Protas. It is what it is.
WSH has been picking higher in the draft than PIT. So their prospect pool should be a little bit better. But it's no where near as good as your trying to make it. Surely not enough to stop them from bottoming out here in the near future. The worst thing that could happen to them is become stuck in the middle. They are better off letting it tank out.
