from what I've heard, I don't think the canes would trade some of their top prospects in a "win now" move. seems like theyd rather be perpetual playoff challengers than rebuild and risk having to be bad for a few years. if they were to go for rentals id be very surprised if they got more than 1.

This is wrong. They will happily move prospects for guys with term, that is why Strome is the big attraction here. They won't pay big prices for rentals because it's dumb. Mortgaging the future of the organization for one or two players that may or may not make a difference isn't worth it. But at the deadline in the past, they've shown a willingness to pay big prices for players that they would be in control with. Look at Trocheck and Skjei, guys that they paid through the nose for, but had term. They were willing to go after Meier who was an RFA, Tkachuk and his 8 year extension. They will pay the price for something that's worth it, but the Canes know when to walk away and won't get sucked into a bidding war. They're savvy, not content

I think this is one of those trades where the value is fair, but it would take an overpay to get him out of Washington.

Yeah thats why I specified a "win now" move. Which is what 2/3 of that deal is. also, if they wanted pacioretty they wouldve re-signed him and not wasted picks/prospects.

On strome, is he really that big of an attraction? Drury has the same points per 60 this season and hes not even on the power play. I'd imagine canes could toss him a better contract than strome's and be better off sticking with him. Out of curiosity, how are you breaking down these values? Like, are you saying strome is drury plus a pick and the rentals are each worth a prospect and a pick?

Mantha and Pacioretty, for me, don't have enough value to matter in this. Pacioretty's worth maybe a 4th. Mantha, with retention, maybe a 2nd. That's more so the value is closer. Strome's the big attraction here. He's putting up similar P/60 to Drury on a team that is FAR more inept with less talent around him. The ageing Ovechkin and rotating cast on the other side isn't exactly a call for success. Putting him between two offensively talented wingers like Carolina can do is a great cure for the second line center spot. He's also got term, meaning it's more likely than a rental
