Buch trade

Created by: BluesReport18
Team: 2023-24 St. Louis Blues
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 26, 2024
Published: Feb. 26, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Blues are quickly falling behind Nashville in the playoff race and teams like Minnesota, Calgary, and Seattle are right behind the Blues for the 9th spot. If the Blues continue to lose or even if they keep up their win-loss-win-loss style they won't make the playoffs. I think now is the time to cash in. I think the 2 teams a trade will come down to are Vegas and Carolina. Buch would be an incredible fit on Vegas and it just makes so much sense for them to be interested in him. He would also be a huge add for Carolina but at the same time I feel like Carolina can never pull off the big trade (they are always rumored to be one of the final teams involved, but it seems they always get outbid).

On top of Buch, I think Army moves out one of Leddy, Krug, or Faulk at the deadline. Faulk is the most likely just because he is the easiest to move. Dallas seems like a nice fit, Detroit could be an option, Buffalo could be a good fit if they're looking to add a veteran presence.

As for the rest of the pending UFAs, I think if you can get semi decent value for them you have to move them.

Lastly, I would look to move one of Saad or Hayes. I think Hayes is a little easier to move given he's a center and he would be very cheap if the Blues retained 50%.
Trades
1.
STL
  1. Edstrom, David
  2. Whitecloud, Zach
  3. 2024 1st round pick (VGK)
  4. 2024 3rd round pick (VGK)
  5. 2025 2nd round pick (VGK)
Additional Details:
It's been stated that Buch won't be moved unless the value is at LEAST 2 firsts. That means the price will likely be more than that especially if the Blues get a few teams bidding the price up.

So here the Blues get:
Edstrom - projects as a solid 2 way, middle 6 center. He plays on the same team as Stenberg so the Blues should be familiar with him already.
Whitecloud - I think Whitecloud is expendable with the emergence of Korczak. Whitecloud is a great 3rd pair dman but has the potential to be more.
1st - late first round pick
2nd + 3rd - cost for the Blues to retain 50% on Buch. I don't think Army will love the idea of retaining but I personally would gladly retain on him if it meant the Blues got a greater package.
VGK
  1. Buchnevich, Pavel ($2,900,000 retained)
2.
STL
  1. 2024 3rd round pick (TBL)
  2. 2024 5th round pick (TBL)
  3. 2025 6th round pick (TBL)
Additional Details:
Blues get some picks for pending UFAs and Tampa gets some quality depth pieces for cheap.
TBL
  1. Kapanen, Kasperi ($1,600,000 retained)
  2. Scandella, Marco
3.
STL
  1. Barbashev, Maxim [Reserve List]
  2. 2024 2nd round pick (NYR)
Additional Details:
Rangers get their 3C, Blues get a late 2nd and an okay prospect.
NYR
  1. Hayes, Kevin ($1,785,714 retained)
4.
STL
  1. Berggren, Jonatan
  2. Kostin, Klim
  3. Määttä, Olli
  4. 2024 2nd round pick (DET)
Additional Details:
A bit of an undersell but Detroit gets the top 4 RHD they're looking for. Faulk has good offense and isn't afraid to throw a big hit every once and a while. Playing with anyone other than Krug would help him a ton.
5.
STL
  1. Pärssinen, Juuso
Additional Details:
Parssinen has a lot of talent but isn't given a good chance in Nashville. This would be a bit of a sell low move by Nashville so they are unlikely to do it but you never know.
NSH
  1. Alexandrov, Nikita
  2. 2024 2nd round pick (NYR)

fair, I feel like he's very similar in style to Roy and Detroit fans seem to want him so I liked the fit of Faulk to Detroit.

I would disagree with that. Faulk is a pretty good defender. Not amazing by any means but he's definitely solid. It's the fact that he has to play with Krug every night that hurts his defensive numbers.

Rangers pass. Hayes would be our 4C. Wouldnt pay more than a 4th + Barbashev tbh.

No he wouldn’t. JBrod would be the 4C. We’re really stooping to not trading second rders for a guy who is 56% on faceoffs, who is half retained for 3 seasons, on a cup or bust season? Speak for yourself. I’d be all over this if I’m Drury

The level of disconnect by Ranger fans of what actually needs to happen this year is astounding. We’re vying for the prez trophy and this guy is worried about second rd picks. I literally can’t😂

He can play defense at times. 21-22 he was actually really solid defensively. But most of this year and last he hasn’t been good defensively.

Analytics are rarely ever going to look good on Blues defenseman this year. Their new defensive scheme is based on allowing teams to do whatever they want around the perimeter including shoot. But, in terms of Faulk, hard to tell via eye test, but he’s certainly not going to be confused with a guy you want playing against top competition.

Always liked faulk but I'm not sure he's the answer really but it seems more an off-season type of deal to me.

That Hayes contract is awful to the point you're gonna have to give up assets to get rid of it. He's a pure cap dump at this point.

My objection isn't to the cost to acquire him, it's his play style which doesn't include playing good defense or giving 100% every shift. You need to READ.

If the Blues retained on Hayes, they could easily trade his contract. Could probably even trade it without retaining depending on team. He's a reliable 3rd line center at 3.5M. Ideal - no. But not a pure cap dump. Goodrow on the other hand - yes.

You ASSUME I don't....ever think of that? Why did the Flyers eat half of his huge contract to get rid of him?

Not if the 3C doesn't play D and play hard every shift of every game its not. It's not just about numbers.

Whatever man. I think it’s a steal, I don’t think Drury wants him tho probably for your reasons. Maybe bigger fish to fry by next week

He was a good Ranger, Hayes

Was is a good way to put it. The Flyers ate over $10.5 million to trade him and got just a 6th round pick in the trade. Says a lot about his work ethic and the fact Torts doesn't put up with that stuff. IMO, neither should the Rangers at any cost.
