Sell Toffoli regroup next year

Created by: KDev
Team: 2024-25 New Jersey Devils

Description
The team is still close. This season has been a setback for sure but I think it really highlighted some of the issues.
1. The team is still super young. Forcing 2 teenagers to play top defensive minutes against some of the worlds greatest players is not small. They are still growing and Nemec specifically is going to be a top 10 defender. He reminds me a lot of Heiskanen.
2. Lindy has clearly lost the room and it is long due for a new voice. If Fitz is serious about proving last year wasn’t a fluke it starts with Lindy Ruff getting canned.
3. Goaltending was a serious issue (obviously). Fitz gambled on Schmid and VV repeating or at least giving average goaltending this year that they showed before. It did not pay off. If you want to blame Fitz for anything it is this gamble (which I was ok with before the season started) and not firing Lindy Ruff earlier on in the season.
At minimum I need Fitz to bring in at least 2 goalies for 24-25. Out of the 4, you have to think at least 1 of these guys has to give you something resembling decent. And to be honest it could be all the team needs if they can get back to being deadly offensively. If he wants to go after a big fish I’m all for it though I don’t think Markstrom is the right answer.
4. With McLeod never returning (and for good reason) we need another 3C. Duchene might be expensive but he can win you FOs give you some serious depth scoring that the team desperately needs from the 3rd line. The other idea I have in mind is bringing back Coleman. He’s honestly everything we need right now.
4. Probably need another defensive LD. Could honestly use a couple bodies for injury protection that can play in the A.
Team needs fresh bodies in the A as Utica has had a rough team over the years. Give the young prospects some able bodies around them and let them know what it’s like to win.

Toffoli to me seems like the obvious best Top 6 forward rental available (unless Pitt is willing to move Guentzel) with the injuries Vegas has I think they will seriously push for Toffoli. Miller adds some more defensive depth that every contender covets. Not sure how Vegas fans feel about Brisson, they may think this a bit much but I don’t think he’s more than a 3rd line guy, which is kind of what the Devils should be targeting along with a 1st.

Coleman went for a good prospect and a 1st round pick when he had 31 points in 57 games in 2019-20, this year he has 46 points in 59 games, its going to cost a lot more than that to get him.

Coleman had a salary of 1.7 million when he went for said 1st+Prospect and was 28 years old
Now he has a salary of 5 million dollars.

That's interesting. Would suck for Pickles to leave, but that is a solid return.

His salary and age offset that.

I mean we can all see this is clearly a career year for him. They are getting a good prospect that hasn’t gotten the chance to play in NJ, a 1st and a mid pick. I think this is pretty fair value for Coleman. If you wanna bump up the 4th to like a 3rd I think that’s reasonable but it’s not like we are getting a bonafide top line player.

As much as I am frustrated with Lindy…it’s really hard to justify pulling the plug mid-season. They took two-top four defenders away in free agency, took another two away in injury. Vitek fell apart.

That said, there is enough there to question whether he is right guy. But mid-season firing would have left us with Travis Green as interim coach. There are not many great candidates available mid-year. If we move on over the summer…we probably would become one of the more sought after jobs and would have long list to choose from. (Jay Leach, Jay Pandolfo, Tony Granato, etc).

Also don’t think we let so much young depth walk (Hatakka, Clarke, Halonen, etc) to replace with so many older vets (there is a veteran limit on AHL rosters, which we bump up against here too).

There are also a few guys off reserves who could figure into mix too. Bardakhov plays the style of game we lack, for instance. His contract is up after this season.

You’re right about the young guys in the AHL depth. Just didn’t really bother signing them originally because this was supposed to be about the main roster but clearly got carried away with the vets and kind of forgot about resigning them afterwards

Depth, especially on blue line, is key.
