Deadline Targets

Created by: Letsgosharks
Team: 2023-24 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 29, 2024
Published: Mar. 1, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
What could the deadline look like?

Good god the tank is ON

Sharks basically sell everything they have, focus on draft picks, young wingers, and more. One can argue that San Jose may have enough wingers of this kind of caliber, but hey, the more the merrier, and the more likely one will really pan out.

Sharks gear up for a big off-season with a lot of decisions to make and a very very young team, with two more elite prospects entering the system. It may take a bit, but there is light at the end of the tunnel.

God speed Grier.

Trades
1.
SJS
  1. Goodrow, Barclay
  2. Kakko, Kaapo
Additional Details:
The Shark's first move is taking a splash on a young RW who needs a change of scenery. On San Jose, he will receive an obvious increase in playing time, with most likely RW1 time.

San Jose takes on Goodrow's contract in order to help balance out the deal.

Issues: could end up being a waste of a couple of the sharks two biggest chips at the deadline, but I believe that it will take this much and maybe more to pry Kaako from NYR. This is a risk that I am willing to take.
NYR
  1. Barabanov, Alexander
  2. Duclair, Anthony ($1,500,000 retained)
  3. 2024 4th round pick (VGK)
2.
SJS
  1. Kaliyev, Arthur
  2. 2025 3rd round pick (LAK)
Additional Details:
Another guy San Jose could target. San Jose sends Kahkonen to LA in exchange for Kaliyev, yet another winger with potential. Kings receive a goaltender who will help them. I know his save percentage is only around .905, but that is on arguably the worst D-Core in NHL history.

I think that he could flourish on a good team.
3.
SJS
  1. Prosvetov, Ivan
Additional Details:
Avs go after a depth defenseman who is cost controlled for years.

San Jose receives a young, big goaltender that they could use when their window to contend for a playoff spot begins to open in a couple years.
4.
SJS
  1. 2024 3rd round pick (NYI)
Additional Details:
Sharks send Rutta to Toronto, a cost controlled Right handed Dman who knows what it takes to win a cup.

A third for his services.
5.
SJS
  1. Casey, Seamus [Reserve List]
Additional Details:
Assume 14OA all RD off the board.

Sharks take a splash on Seamas Casey, a nasty prospect from NJD.

Made draft day

Feel like both sides accept this, devils can draft towards their needs, sharks fill a need.

Sturm also fills a need as NJD will look to have a bounce back season.
NJD

Not improving the NYR, if anything it makes the worse - so why? What is the incentive here 🤔?

Just don't see the Avs moving on a Dman at the TDL.

Maybe, but that would open up a noticeable hole on D. I'd rather they dump Ryjo somehow and put together a package for another C.

I'm amused that you think LA adds in a Kaliyev for Kahkonen swap.

Fair value on Casey. Depends on who's available, what can be done with the pick, who we like (important to remember we probably have another pick right in that range). I like strum for a 4C role. Don't know if NJD accepts, which means it's a rock solid fair trade

dont get me wrong, i love Bo but he is a liability. if youre the owner or GM, you have to understand that keeping Bo is a risk from his past. Same goes for Girard (who ive wanted gone for 3 years now), and think of the dman Avs could acquire with 5mill to spend. At this point, id be ok with sending Manson and Girard out for another top 4 dman and a 2C. I also dont think Landeskog ever plays again, and if he does, he wont be at his potential or former self. this is the huge issue with the Avs, its not just replacing a 2C, its also their captain. just my .02

Makes sense. I think this season shows that the Avs aren't yet willing to give up on Bo. They've moved him around and he's getting far more comfortable playing both left and right. That makes him more valuable to the Avs, but also likely more valuable as a trade asset. I'm a Sammy G fan and this season proved his value even more as his return definitely sparked the Avs. That said, I understand he's also expendable long-term. If they move a Dman than it should be Manson, but his NTC will make that hard. The Avs kept popping up in the conversations about Tanev and now they're mentioned around Hanifin, so who knows what the plan is?

I'm trying not to think about Landy until the situation is clearer, but if I had to guess, he's not likely this year. Then, we'll see.

hm, I guess my thought was a cap dump to help the future as well, and that Duke and Barabanov could help in the playoffs as they will clearly have a boost on a better team, again this was more or less a list of people I would love San Jose to target

Has he not been healthy scratched multiple games? and doesn't LA need another goalie? regardless I do not really know his value, what would you value him as, I would love to grab him

Yeah, I will just say time and time again, I just don't see him having a role on the devils, with that being said, they could always ship him off in a package for a major player instead of a pick, I think the devils could easily draft to their needs, a center a winger? I don't know but I just see this making sense

My thought process:

He can play LD (He has in the past).
We may ship out one of Hamilton or Marino after next season to clear cap space for the Luke raise, and having Casey as an ELC replacement would be huge in that case.

I think his value isn't gonna go down so not really a point trading him this season unless it's for a package we really like that's brought to us (a scenario like this) or he's demanded by a team for one of our targets as a buyer.

I also don't think, looking at all the injuries we have, it's a bad thing to have him as a waiver exempt option next year.

Give him PP1, 1st pairing, PK time on the AHL team next year and call him up for injuries (What we did with Nemec and ended up calling him up).

Then, after next year, reassess.

Totally makes sense, I also think on the flip side, he is the one that can be moved without much hurt. I do not see Hamilton being moved as the contract says how committed the Devils are to him.

On the right you have Hamilton - marino - Nemec - Miller - I think Hughes can play both sides?

Regardless the depth is there and Casey probably needs a few years to really get going, and with a team who should be in Win-now mode, should they really have another super young dman in their core?

Cap dump we can discuss in the off-season. And I rather have Kakko as solid 3rd liner than Duke that's you don't know what you have?

I think that's the kind of guy the Avs might look at IF they've solved the 2C and back up issues and IF they're moving on from Manson (to keep a bit of nasty on the D corps). So probably off season rather than TDL.

That chances of NYR winning that trade is slim. Unfortunately Sharks don't have so many players of interest yet, they are mostly in the system still.
To be honest I'm not sure what it would take? even from a personal perspective...
We just know he will be a solid two-way 60 ish player the second he starts playing for another team. But Drury can't really trade him as such. That is the issue.
So I just leave all of that to Drury to be honest.

Tbh idk if it makes that much sense to trade him then, but let’s say he doesn’t work out, then you are toast with him which kind of sucks

thats the problem with these high picks not panning out, teams who have them still view them with so much value, but teams who are trying to trade for him view him as a project type player.
