My guess on the Canes offer for Petey

Created by: alwaysnextyear
Team: 2023-24 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 1, 2024

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Yes, it may just be a negotiating ploy by Rutherford and Allvin, but I have to think that the CAR offer was substantial in order to make them even consider approaching Petey's representatives with what may have been an implied ultimatum.

Necas makes sense as the primary piece, and positionally Kotkaniemi would make sense as a young center coming back (although his upside is questionable with a long contract).

Seems like Nikishin is the more 'untouchable' of the two D prospects, so Morrow is included along with a 1st and 2nd.

Does this seem like the offer that got the Canucks excited? Was it better than this?

PS. If this type of trade were to happen I would almost guarantee that VAN would flip the CAR 1st for another player to help them this year.

This seems like about what the offer might be. I could also talks between the two teams picking up again if Petterson isn't signed before Free Agency

It seems about right. We know the Canes wouldn't hesitate to trade Pesce if he won't extend at a reasonable dollar and could be used to bring in a player of Petey's caliber. Pesce might have been a player discussed as well.

Honestly, I think Petey learned a bit about the business side of things. The team has to have clarity on its future and his contract is the first piece to address. The longer he waits to re-sign/not re-sign, it only impacts the direction of the team. Not saying he wouldn't know that, but if the FO is going to continue to be aggressive before the TDL, they need to know if he is onboard or not.

That would be an extremely underwhelming return if that was the offer. It would have to be Nikishin over Morrow for it to make any sense for the Canucks

•Necas is a great piece
•KK is an overpaid bottom 6C with too much term. Borderline cap dump
•Morrow is a good but not good enough prospect to be the second best piece
•Late 1st
•Mid 2nd

He's a pending RFA waiting for a huge payday you aren't exactly going to get the greatest return. When taking on a player it isn't just about the player himself it's about the contract that he is either coming with or will be signed to

He’s still a borderline top 5C/top 10 player and will likely be worth the contract he gets. You also have to take into account the Canucks are taking back KK’s contract in this scenario which is a pretty bad contract

There needs to be 2 high end pieces in the trade. Necas is one. A late 1st/good but not great prospect doesn’t cut it as the second one

There's probably another prospect involved (not named Nikishin) but this isn't a bad deal

I think the Canucks can get a better deal elsewhere. Especially one where they don’t have to take on a bad contract for 6 years

There's not gonna be many suitors... which teams do you think have the ability to fit his salary in their cap?
I doubt you get a deal much better than this

He's gonna want to go to a contender and as an unsigned RFA, he has a lot of power so that eliminates all but Dallas.
Dallas doesn't have a 2C problem with Hintz, Duchene, and Johnston

Detroit might be a possibility.

Duchene is a UFA, and Dallas may potentially want to upgrade Hintz/Johnston to Pettersson (or play one on the wing). Pettersson 1C and Hintz/Johnston 2C would be one of the best center duos in the league (probably top 2 or 3 if Hintz is the 2C)

Dallas has other issues to deal with before upgrading a spot that isn't a weakness... like the bottom half of the defensive corps and they have to give raises to some critical pieces in the next couple of years and they probably don't have the cap space for next year... like after giving Pettersson his deal they have $7m left to fill 6 spots including a few top-6/top-4
