Calgary actually turned down at least 1 or 2 offers for Tanev that included a 1st but also expected them to take on a player with term who they didn't want. Speculation is the teams were edmonton and Colorado, the players were Codi Ceci and Ryan Johansen.

Things happen and change quickly around the deadline. Recent rumor, just today, is the Flames may look at ADD a veteran defenceman, perhaps with term for another year, as a stop-gap after trading Hanifin next. Perhaps a Murray Edwards directive to keep the playoff hopes alive. Ceci would have fit that billing, but perhaps not a good enough player for Conroy? Who knows.

I agree, I'd have been happy with Ceci coming back to fill a spot for next year but apparently the Flames weren't. Same for me with RyJo, he'd be handy to have around next year. Today's rumor is NJ says they're willing to take Marky's full cap hit on now... After Calgary said yesterday they aren't going to trade him after all.

Then again I believe the reason Calgary has balked at taking on or retaining salary on contracts with term is because Conroy intends to be a buyer in free agency this summer and wants as much cap space available as possible. Sam Reinhart maybe?
