TDL and next year

Initial Creation Date: Mar. 2, 2024

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
TDL 24:
- Allen: I dont think Hughes will be able to move him this year. There are simply better options on the market for contending teams and the fact that his cap hit carries on next year makes it hard to find a deal. Using our last retention slot for a minimal return wouldnt be worth it.
Armia: Kinda same situation as Allen. If he was UFA, Hughes could easily retain and get a decent return.
Savard: According to recent reports, Hughes' price is really high and I dont see teams getting that desperate.
Evans: He would be a good candidate to sell, but we need bodies at center until the end of the season, so I dont see him being move especially since we already have a plethora of picks.

Draft night 24:
- Unless things change, the Habs get a pick in the 6-8 range at the draft. My prediction is that forwards will drop due to teams going for defensemans early in the draft and the Habs will do the same, simply because Lindstrom wont be on the board by then and they'll prefer Parekh, Dickinson or Yakemchuk over Catton or Demidov, unless they have a guarantee that Demidov will come to the NA after his contract. I honestly wouldnt be surprised if they took Yakemchuk at #8, but I think Iginla will rise as the draft approach and maybe its wishful thinking, but I say Hughes picks him at 8.

I dont think Hughes has any intention of using WPG's pick, but will ultimately have to because the forward targets that fill the profile needed will be either not good enough or too expensive. I expect them to pick an RHD with this pick, I like EJ Emery.

Summer 24:
- Harris for Turcotte. Feels fair to me, Habs dont have room for Harris and Turcotte cant seem to crack the Kings line-up. He'd get opportunities and although I dont have much faith, MSL could help him.
- Sign Xhekaj to a bridge deal, something like 2 years, 1.75 AAV.
- Allen has to be moved. Edmunson's retention will end and a slot will open, which Im sure will be used to facilitate an Allen trade.

TDL 25:
- Dvorak, Armia, Kovacevic, Savard, Evans all shipped at the deadline for a total haul that should be around a last 1st, two 3rds, a 4th and a 5th or the equivalent in terms of prospects (its gonna be picks imo).
- Hutson and Reinbacher earn their ice time through the year and Matheson is traded to Florida for a 2nd and Samoskevich. Fair for both sides imo.

Lines are after the 2025 TDL. We will have 3 1st round picks with a really young line up, perfect opportunity to take a shot at an elite forward who could become available by the 2025 draft (on top of another top 10 pick).

We could end up with
Caufield-Suzuki-Slaf
Iginla-McQueen-Roy
Newhook-Dach-Samoskevich
Heineman-Beck-Turcotte

Hutson-Reinbacher
Ghule-Mailloux
Xhekaj-Barron

Hutson wont be a 1st pairing Dman in 18 months and that Matheson trade makes no sense. The rest is ok.

"Turcotte can't seem to crack the Kings lineup."

False. He started on the Kings top line with Kopitar and Byfield as recently as the last game against Vancouver. And looked good there doing it.

I'll grant you that there's a bit of a roster squeeze when healthy, but this season has never been about Turc being on the roster full time. It's been about him staying healthy and playing a lot of hockey, which he can do better on the Reign. But next year Lizotte and Grundstrom likely won't return, and the Kings will decide what to do with Jaret Anderson-Dolan, so there's a few open roster spots on the Kings. I fully expect Alex to be a full-time NHL'er in 24-25. (Probably along with Akil Thomas as well)

Your assessment of the 2024 TDL is really good, it just doesn't seem like any moves make much sense this year, I'd be surprised if Hughes can pull anything off.

Regarding the following:
- Dvorak, Armia, Kovacevic, Savard, Evans all shipped at the deadline for a total haul that should be around a last 1st, two 3rds, a 4th and a 5th or the equivalent in terms of prospects (its gonna be picks imo).

Can you provide a more detailed break down of value here? I think it's hard to predict anything at this point, but their should be interest in all of these players.

Oc its hard to predict next year, but I think as pending UFAs, Savard can get a 1st, Dvorak retained for close to a 2nd/3rd in value, Evans 3rd and Kovacevic around 4th round. It will also depend on Reinbacher, Hutson and Beck being ready to assume a bigger role for 20 ish games.

Imo we'll need to trade Matheson sooner than later especially if they draft another defenseman this year. I think Hutson and Ghule will be able to share Matheson's responsabilites, especially for like 20 games.

Imo Hutson will play on the 1st PP pretty quickly. Matheson eats big minutes big is a liability defensively, at this point, Ghule will be ready to step up and it gives enough ice to foe Hutson to build confidence and chemistry on the PP.

If you say so, feels like at this point its a good opportunity for the Kings to use the value he has left to improve in other areas.

I'm personnally not that much intersted in him, but we dont have room for Harris or Struble and the move would make sense in terms of positionnal needs.

Valuing a 34 year old Savard @ $3.5M for a 1st round pick and a 27 year old Kovacevic @ $767k for a 4th round pick is just wild to me.
