I don't think any of those vets traded away would hurt the team in any way. We could throw Gus into the mix but he's really upped his game and I really like how that 4th line is playing. Girgensons and Robinson having a lot of chemistry while Krebs seems to have embraced a 4th-line center role.

I am not a big Girgensons fan, he is what he is. IMO should have been gone already.

PIT declines. That isn’t nearly enough in return to justify retaining for this year and next.

TB needs a left not right hand rental, and they don't need the retention.

Point taken. How about no retention?

The starting point would be a 3rd, but you never know because TDL prices can sometimes rise if there is a bidding war or a dire need once other names start flying off of the shelves.

Smith has really struggled and was benched, if I'm not mistaken. Some in Sabreland think he's washed up.

Thoughts?

I couldn’t care less. He’ll fetch a 3rd unretained.

I guess you're not a fan.

At least the Pens should get their 3rd rounder back.

I am the eternal optimist.
"Should Buffalo still be in the hunt (even in their present [very] longshot scenario)"
Three games before the TDL, win then all, Tampa blows it against the Flames and the Sabres are 4 pts away from Tampa with 18 games left to play.
Then they will be buyers and even our pylon EJ will not be traded.
If Tampa tops the Flames and Buffalo loses even one, IMO it would be a very tall mountain to climb even with Luukkonen playing lights out since January first.
Even then it would be difficult to be sellers unless they were also buyers.

EDIT:
Let me add, Buffalo is not ready to give up major assets for a rental.
Last season TDL (or just before) 12 teams traded first round picks, none of them made it the finals.
At this point, I would settle for close again.

Like the Optimism, but the Devils, Islanders and Capitals could also take advantage of that. Sabres need help even if they crush it.

Buffalo is playing like a team that can jump the Caps, Isles and Pens, and maybe even the Devils. Is there enough runway to catch the Wings or Bolts. The odds are squarely against them.

I agree, just saying they need those teams to falter to.
