Cost of Krug at 25M retained

Created by: aldore
Team: 2024-25 St. Louis Blues
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 10, 2024
Published: Mar. 10, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I’m wondering if any teams would want Krug at a 4M cap hit. He can still produce some offense so if you can shelter him defensively he could provide some positive value at the 4M price tag.

Another factor here is he’d have to waive his NTC that Doug gave him for some reason which isn’t going to be super likely. Did Detroit here even tho I know you guys don’t have the need just know he’d waive. Any teams that might fit and have desire for his offensive skill set?

My thoughts is this gets the blues out of his contract for close to the same price as the buyout without the extra years. We wouldn’t get this year at the $333,333 buyout number but we ain’t winning **** next year anyways.

Let me know what the price/if any teams would fit.

This isn't happening.

Yzerman doesn't like small defensemen.

Edvinsson will be making the team next season.

Because of this LD Maatta will likely be traded.

Even if Yzerman were interested Krug makes too much money even retained.

Yzerman will likely be targeting Michigan boy RD Matt Roy in UFA.

Red Wings also have good LD prospects in Johansson, Wallinder, Buim and Viro.

I know you chose Detroit for the hometown part but obviously, as you stated, we don't have a use for him. Also just thinking in general, as a lot of teams have young left-handed defensemen coming up, they would likely gravitate towards younger options. Maybe if a team like Pittsburgh, who only has a few years of competitiveness left (at least in their minds), might be interested in him. I honestly think they play out a few more years and hope that he gets to the point where they can LTIRetire him, or else buy him out with 2-3 years left. This team is at an interesting transition point, they should really focus on getting younger and gaining high end pieces for the future.

I do. And I said that Detroit doesn’t want krug in the caption. It’s where he’s from so I know he’d waive. I wanted to start a discussion on if there are teams he might waive for that would want him at a 4m cap hit.

Stevie Wonder is typically not interested on small Dmen. Setting that aside, I'd like to note that an expectation of not winning anything is not a reason to sneeze at extra cap space if the right player or players are available. One doesn't necessarily have to be contending to splurge on an excellent player. That's how you get to contending. I'm not saying that player has already presented himself, but with the cap rising greatly the next few years, a Krug buyout gets more palatable at a certain tipping point amount of retention. I'm not an economics expert, so I can not tell you what that dollar figure is, but I am fairly sure it's well below 4M.

I would rather have the retention over the buy-out because this team probably isn't doing anything meaningful until 26-27. You still have the cap space to splurge this coming year as your forward core should be cheap with a bunch of guys on ELCs. The cheap buyout year is wasted on a team that probably won't be to the cap ceiling anyway. Then you're stuck paying him 2m+ until 29-30 when this team could be making multiple runs. I would rather eat more money upfront and not impact too much of the future, especially if the Blues retain 2.5m the earliest window in 26-27 would be cheaper to have the retention than buyout.

Would Krug or Boston even be interested in reunion?

Boston was my thought too…Grz expiring and Sweeney has soft spot for undersized dmen (once being one himself).

Minnesota could also be an option…they need an offensive dman. Maybe Carolina if Deangelo and Skjei are gone.
