If the Kings cant resign Roy hes going to walk in free agency, if they had the ability to trade away his "signing rights" it would cost a whole lot more than a defenseman that didn't work out for us.

Look at all those bad contracts, how are we even a fringe playoff team this year.

Columbus accepts. Especially if Tarasov keeps playing like this.

Ah yeah. The way I look at it is that they were never meant to be part of the core, just stop gaps until drafted players take over. Still it hurts right now.

That's fine, just wanted to do something different. Maatta can go to a different team for a third or so and that third can go to the Kings for Matt Roy signing rights.

That's what I was hoping. Tarasov playing well will hopefully make moving Merz easier.

That’s might be ok if he keeps 87 happy. We probably have to pretend for one more season.

Historically "signing rights" for pending UFAs don't exist. There is no such thing as signing rights for a UFA, its either you pay a team to sign the player to a contract your team wants then trade for that player under the contract discussed or you have to wait to free agency. Any pending UFA traded after the trade deadline and before the draft is not permitted to play in the upcoming season so they would have to extended then traded at the draft or the team would have to wait to take a shot at the player in free agency.

When did that rule change? There have been many recent trades of such. I know players traded after the deadline are no longer permitted to play the rest of that season and playoffs, but next season as well? Husso and Goodrow are two recent examples I can think of off the top of my head.

When you trade an expiring player before July 1st, that's trading their signing rights...

There's quite literally no other reason to acquire an expiring UFA pre July 1st.

It didn't. They made that up in their brain. The PA would never sign off on a rule that would result in a player being ineligible for a whole season just because teams decided to trade him.

Lol, I didn't even get to that bull****, I quit reading halfway through after he said there's no history of UFA's signing rights being traded.

Dan Hamhuis is the one who immediately comes to mind, though I'm certain there are much more recent examples.
