Mangiapane isn’t getting a 1st. The one season he had that could have gotten at least a 1st was 2 seasons ago.

What do you consider fair value for Markstrom with retention?
Personally don’t think Holz is enough considering his play/gm’s comments and the ways your coach’s have played him.

2025 1st+2nd.

2nd for unretained Markstrom, 1st for the retention.

If Markstrom plays well enough you can get additional conditional picks

LOL never seen a trade where the retention price is more than the actual trade value for the guy

6 million dollars in retention.

Markstrom is not a 9 mill goalie. (To provide 6 mill in surplus value). The retention is worth more

If you want a top player in the most important position you either have to draft him, see potential in a player undervalued by their current team (Adin Hill), or pay a top price. If that's all that NJ's offering, then good luck with Kahkonen, Allen and Daws.

Surely a goaltender like Markstrom could never be acquired for free in UFA coming off a top 5 Vezina season. Wait, I’m being told that’s exactly how Calgary got Markstrom.

Start with Holtz for Markstrom with $2m retained

(Conroy already agreed to it)

Then subtract the cost of renting Markstrom for 2023-24.

Then subtract by how poorly markstrom has played since said offer occurred (0.878)

Ya that was the same masterful offseason where Jim Benning also let Tanev and Toffoli walk for free. Using a then poorly managed Vancouver side is not the best example. Big name players do hit the market but only when a gm mismanages their assets.

I'd argue that after Fitz ripped on Holtz in the media, his trade value would drop no? Why would we take a young player that your own gm is not happy with as a center piece?

Because it was the centerpiece your GM asked for

fair point but then that deal fell through. Also I may be wrong, but i believe that deal fell through because Conroy wanted more, doubt he'd go back and accept it especially considering NJ wants a goalie more than we want to trade Markstrom

Mercer is not worth Markstrom alone far less adding a 1st. He won't be getting anywhere near 7.5 mil/yr for 6 years on his next contract either. He'll get more like 4.5 for 3 years or maybe as much as 6 on a 1 year offer sheet.

Calgary won't be retaining 50% on Mangiapane either he's worth a late 1st or at least close without any retention. A more reasonable offer would be the 1st for Mangiapane with 1.5 mil retained Calgary should consider that though they might not accept it without an extra sweetener coming back. Or just remove the retention on the offer in the original post, chances are good Calgary would accept that.

Calgary would probably accept Detroit's or Boston's 2024 1st too though that'd take some very complicated conditions since both picks already have conditions on them. Another 2024 1st would be very useful to move up in the draft and get a good center prospect. In fact if the Flames own pick winds up at 9 or 10 (quite likely) that should be enough to get Tig Iginla and if we can use the other picks to move up to 5th or 6th we might even be able to get Calgary born RD Carter Yakemchuk too. Or probably not possible but if we can trade our own 1st + more to move up enough to take Caydem Lindstrom (probably goes 2nd or 3rd but could drop a spot or 2) that'd be well worth doing.
