Brendan Smith has no value. Calgary would only do this if they have a proven top 6 center coming in from elsewhere. Mercer is a 3rd line center with good potential to be a middle 6 soon but counting on him to be a top 6 center is too much.

It isn't the value, it's the fit. Calgary isn't doing a full rebuild which means they simply can't afford to move Kadri if they don't have a suitable replacement. Mercer could be a replacement eventually but he isn't that now and it's far from a sure thing he ever will be. Calgary can afford to move Marstrom for Mercer and a 1st. Goal is where NJ really needs to upgrade while Calgary needs forwards, centers and right shots in particular. Trading from an area of strength to shore up an area of weakness for both teams.
