Can the Bolts check Stammer and work around the cap

Created by: Logicalicesports
Team: 2024-25 Tampa Bay Lightning
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 25, 2024
Published: Mar. 25, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
NYR - TAMPA trade during the offseason. Connecting back to the old roots there. NYR gets a B+ College Prospect, B-/C+ College Prospect and a pair of later round picks, ship Kakko out as it is not working in New York and Kakko is potentially the next big bust.

Duke, Howard and Gauthier get some time to develop in the AHL. Much like a lot of the Lightning Stars. Syracuse is one of the best AHL programs for developing NHL mainstay players. Hugo gets one more season as the starting goalie in Syracuse before coming up to backup Vasy.

The lightning make a couple depth signings but nothing else major.

Re-sign Stamkos to a relatively team friendly deal. (Still 8 million a year).

Bring Huuhtanen over. He is playing amazing in Liiga and he is ready for the big league.

Not much point in that Kakko trade for the rangers.

They trade away depth at RW (a position of need) for scraps that best case scenario wont play for the team for 3 years? Also Kakko more likely gets in the range of 2-3 mil

As crazy as it seems, I think they need to recoup their loses and admit they either developed Kakko poorly and he is not going to be anything more than a middle sixer or they need to trade him for assets well he still has some value. His value has never been lower than what it is now but it could keep going downhill with another poor season (5 seasons into his career already) and then you have nothing worth that number 2 selection you made.

Not a diehard fan of either team by any means but I think Kakko either needs A) a change of scenery or B) people to admit he could honestly be a bust.

I like Kakko evenly though he isn't quite panning out how he was expected to. So do not take this as a dig to him

When would you be ready to call a player a bust?

Yakapov's Numbers through 4 seasons:

2012–13 Edmonton Oilers NHL 48 17 14 31
2013–14 Edmonton Oilers NHL 63 11 13 24
2014–15 Edmonton Oilers NHL 81 14 19 33
2015–16 Edmonton Oilers NHL 60 8 15 23

Total Points through 4 seasons: 111

Compared to Kakkos:
2019–20 New York Rangers NHL 66 10 13 23
2020–21 New York Rangers NHL 48 9 8 17
2021–22 New York Rangers NHL 43 7 11 18
2022–23 New York Rangers NHL 82 18 22 40

Total Points through 4 seasons: 98

Edit: Lets not forget to mention he has 14 points this year... on pace for his worst season yet

Why do they “need to” recoup their “losses”? Because Kakko isn’t a point per game player? Lol

There’s more to hockey than just scoring. And so what if he’s not living up the the #2 overall hype. He’s still better than useless picks/prospects and the rangers need RWs

Its called a bust. You can get high value back before he completely crosses that line or are you willing to ride it out and see if he can do something other than look like a traffic cone for most of the game.

Edit: And by high value I mean more than one draft pick or prospect in this situation.

Bust means no one would touch him and he fails in the NHL and goes overseas to keep playing lol

He’s still a good young NHLer and probably a better 3rd liner than majority of the league 3rd liners. Young, cheap, solid 2 way player who’s good for 30-40 points at 5v5

But since you have all the answers, who plays 3RW for the rangers then next year? Lol because I highly doubt they’re better than Kakko

Of i think there are plenty of better options than a 14 point 5th season second overall pick. Yakapov was named a bust before he stopped playing in the NHL so I don't think that point is necessarily valid. Sure it is what ended up happening but he was a bust before he left the states. I would say Kakko is a bust and they would be better off with Sheary from the bolts IMO

Weird how the rangers are winning and a top team despite their roster filled with “bust” caliber players lmao but other teams are loaded with multiple point per game players

Might wanna worry about your own team my guy

If Kakko is a bust, then what was Thompson ages 20-23? Lol or how about Nichushkin?

There’s so many examples of young guy’s offense taking a bit longer todevelop

This kind of stat watching is part of what makes it so difficult to have a real conversation about Kakko’s contribution at the NHL level. You are comparing him to Yakupov on point production alone when Kakko’s freshman and sophomore seasons were cut short due to Covid, on top of that Yakupov had zero positional awareness and was always chasing the play, whereas Kakko has established himself as being very defensively responsible.

Yakupov’s rookie season was cut short due to the lockout, but he was able to remain conditioned by playing in the KHL.

Even if the Rangers did decide to move on from Kakko, that package of scraps doesn't come close to getting him. There would be multiple teams in on Kakko if he's made available. So this offer would get easily topped. And Rangers would want an established NHL piece that helps them now. Not a bunch of mid value futures.

And Tampa pays to dump Sheary. If JBB can find someone to take him for a 3rd, Bolts don't get anything back.

$8m for Stammer isn't smart. If that's what it takes to sign him, Tampa should move on.

@Terrifiedofeveryone just said all that needs to be said. Kakko is 10x the player yak was without the puck. He is also trending better than Nichushkin did and has 3 years less than him. I’ve done this dance with 30 other clowns that stat watch. Have you seen the stat for win record with and without Kakko in the lineup? That’s a fun one that will absolutely contradict your opinion

I get that for sure and I honestly think Kakko tops out as a defensive middle six player and im fine with that. I just dont get why Rangers would trade an effective young 3rd liner for scraps

I'll quote myself from another thread, where people were discussing if Kakko is worth -25 Top 10 pick and some other clown was comparing him to Yakupov.

"The thing is that even though Kakkos point production is disappointing, he's actually overall good player unlike Yakupov, without any attitude problems. He's possession monster and like Rangers' best defensive forward. They have been a lot better team with Kakko in roster than they were, when he was ínjured. Will get a first easily, but not top10."

Tbh if he'd been 10-15 ovr pick instead of 2nd ovr, people wouldn't be calling him a bust. Disappointing maybe, but not a bust.

And when you are just checking stats, even though this season has been disappointing, last season he produced 40 points (37 even strength) with bottom-6 TOI and 00:53 TOIPP. One weak season doesn't change his value that much. Especially someone who just turned 23. At that age i.e Thompson had 12p in 65 games and Nichuskin or Kaprizov didn't even play in NHL.

Rangers have absolutely no interest to trade him for bunch of scraps. To move him would require Rangers to receive immediate help for their RW. Even though trade somewhere where he could get consistent TOP-6 minutes with PP time would be best for Kakko. Sharks for example. Would be their best RW (doesn't require much though).

And no, I'm not a Rangers fan. Would be happy if Flyers acquired him and RW wouldn't be the strongest part of the team.
