Last Year of Cap Hell - Aggressive

Created by: BenghisKHan
Team: 2024-25 Minnesota Wild
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 1, 2024
Published: Apr. 1, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is my companion projection to Last Year of Cap Hell - Passive
I could see GMBG going this route. Two biggest problems was depth and weak secondary scoring. Trading draft capital for a younger talent with some cost control addresses both issues. Then resign Fleury and run it back.

The trade for Marchenko is more symbolic than actual I don't think a first round pick will be in play but I could see multiple seconds and potentially prospects like Firstov, Lambos, ect available.

This will make the Wild competitive for a 3rd place spot in the division and a 5-6 overall in the conference at the expense of having significant purchasing power in 2025-26 when the Parise and Suter buyouts fall off.

Who’s Cam Severson? Why would Columbus want to buy out Gudbranson? Why would Minnesota move their captain for that?

Sorry got mixed up on the name…but as far as Gudbranson goes, he really is starting to not have much of a role on this team. I like Guddy but he is very limited and Olivier and possibly Malatesta can replace his physicality. I also have a feeling the Jackets may be targeting Adam Jiricek in the draft. Spurgeon is a huge regression risk. For a team that is trying to win now it would make more sense for them to get a younger player who is a mil cheap on the cap hit and signed long term during the duration of their most productive yrs.

Jiricek is expected to go in the middle of the first round and we don't have a pick there, so assuming we're targeting him is a little silly. Gudbranson's role on the team has, if anything, expanded; he's been one of the few Experienced Leaders we can rely on. I'll let Minnesota fans speak on the possibility of a Spurgeon move but personally I wouldn't be so keen on the idea if I were in that position, no matter how good Faber looks.

I saying we possibly trade down. It isn’t completely out of the question. Depending on the deals out there, the New GM, whoever it will be, may be interested in trying to win now.

I'm not touching that Severson contract. Spurgeon's money can be put to better use later on.

And any kind of Rossi for Johnson swap is DOA because it would create a hole at center to acquire a winger.

It really just depends on the future outlook. I mean do you maximize the years of Boldy, Kaprizov and Eriksson Ek or do you try the long game which make more sense financially but shorten the contention window. The teams that win cups are the teams that are aggressive and don’t worry so much about money. Not saying you’re wrong but FO’s think differently.

There needs to be a window first before we worry about the window. This deal doesn't do anything to create a window.

If there's a window in a couple years or so, Spurgeon's money can be used to support that window when we know when it is and what we need. Locking it up in Severson isn't aggressive it's just reckless.

Side question: at what point do you think it’s fair to consider firing the GM instead?

He’s the one responsible for the terrible cap issues and he’s already fired and hired coaches and nothing has changed. I feel like a fresh view on things might be the way to go

He is not at all to blame for our cap hell. The only good move was to buy out Suter and Parise. He made the right decision.

Kaprizov only has two yrs left on his deal. He can walk after that. I am not arguing against your point I am simply implying that if he leaves they may have missed their opportunity.

I don't know how you can watch the games and not think Gudbranson doesn't have an extremely important role on the team. Watch them between whistles and on the bench. Every single young player looks to him, especially with Jenner out. Shoot, even when Jenner is there, they're looking at Guddy. He's here for the duration for good reason, even if he's 7D by 2025.

Adam Jiricek is extremely raw and unlikely to see NHL time for at least three years, and probably longer before he's a regular. He is very much not his brother. Moreover, he's a projected mid-to-late first rounder, a pick which the Jackets do not possess and are unlikely to trade up for. He will not be picked in the top five, and frankly I'm insulted you think the Jackets would trade down from a top six pick to the mid teens. Adam Jiricek has absolutely no relation to Erik Gudbranson's roster spot.

Minnesota isn't in a window now, and arguably a young team needs a vet in leadership more than anything. We make the same argument about Jenner all the time. "Risk for regression" is a stupid bogeyman.
