Description
Barron has been called up. If only one of Xhekaj and Guhle was injured, we wouldn’t have had to call up Barron.

That also means Laval probably won’t make the playoffs cuz Barron was their best d

Gotta think Hughes is trying to figure, who are the best seven Dmen for next season. No problem having too many competent NHL Dmen.
As suggested...could the Habs trade a couple of cost of efficient Dmen for a premium expensive forward to team that needs cap?

I’d be really interested in a guy like Tyler Seguin. Great player but he is overpaid. I would offer something like Kovacevic and a third rounder

Logan Couture would be the best option as a number 2C for 2-3 years if they cant sign Monahan in the offseason or trade for a Lundell type after the Sharks dumped Hertl. SJS should be willing to give up Logan for little with that cap hit. They DONT have to dump him but if they can get anything at all they should as they did with Hertl. SJS are starting from scratch and they are 2-3 years behind the Habs rebuild. A 2nd and a 3rd would be more than enough and the Habs have 12 picks in 1st 3 rounds the next 2 drafts.

Trouble with Sequin he isn't great or even very good now. Believe it was hip surgery that has really affected his skating. For his cap of 9.8m, Habs find better UFAs. Not really game changing centres this summer thought.

They don't need a game changing centre though. They still arent going to contend til, at best, 2-3 years. They just want to keep progressing, they have improved every year in point totals since 2022 and not be stuck in mud/soft like the Sabres or have some kind of dressing room/leadership anarchy like the Senators. Tampa/Florida/Toronto/Boston dont seem like they are going away anytime soon and Detroit looks legit now.

I wouldnt be against bringing back Monahan, maybe, swing a deal for Couture. They have options with 12 picks in 1st 3 rounds the next 2 drafts in '24,'25.

This is the offseason that Hughes has more options than ever after building draft stock and seeing progression from the young players that look like the fixtures (Slaf, Xhekaj, Guhle, etc) and the pretenders that probably don't have a role (Barron, Kidney, maybe even Dach)

IMO, I would stay away from the aging Couture, but Monahan seems like a good choice. There are UFA few centres available this summer so signing one might be tough. The other thing is Sequin's NMC so I'm doubting he is accepting a trade to a non playoff team.

I don't really care whom they get as long as its some kind of insurance as relying on Dach to be healthy ain't working out, he hasnt proved he can play a full year! They need to keep improving otherwise the kids will start to lose their fire and Suzuki has already spoken about it after losses. They cant become the Senators whom probably need a tear down at this point.
