I don't know about that Lindholm contract. I'm sure every GM is skittish on that after the year he's had.

Boston can have Chychrun for a 1st + two 2nds.

Acquiring Ullmark makes sense only if we move one of Korpisalo / Forsberg.

The wheels on the bus go round and round. Both Ullmark and Chychrun have rental rate values as established by every rental. 1st and 3rd unless retention is included. We can wait until the trade deadline to figure that out again.

If Ullmark is willing to waive his NTC to take an extension to go to Ottawa, I could see a deal like this … but it would include Boston taking the negative contract of Forsberg (who most likely gets buried).

I’d assume we’d sign Heinen instead of Bertuzzi

with respect, how do you figure we are getting that much value back for him? Hes coming off a terrible season and hes 1 year to UFA

My hope is that we either get a 1st + two 2nds or something like what Calgary got for Hanifin.

And if not, we just sign him to an 8 year extension.

He's only coming off a terrible season because the entire team is coming off a terrible season.

If he was on a much better team than Ottawa or Arizona, he would likely thrive as an elite Top 4 defenseman.

Furthermore, this year was the first year that Chychrun played a full 82 game season.

And he did so while being our best D on the powerplay as well as playing 22+ minutes a night on his offside on a poorly constructed hockey team.

That has to count for something.

I expect any Chychrun trade to include 50% retention.

well, we've got all sorts of issues here - first, hope away. doesn't mean it's happening.

and you want to use hanifin as a comp, but also want a first and two seconds? Hanifin got a first rounder two years away, a conditional third, and a depth d man....oh and he was playing fantastic as opposed to a major down year.

This trade is fair is Ullmark can be convinced to extend in Ottawa. I think the sens would be lucky to get a 2024 first, but probably has to hope for a 2025 first. adding two seconds is insane.

elite top four defensemen? first off, what does that mean? elite top four defensemen are called top pair defensemen, and chychrun has not looked like that. the word elite shouldn't be used in the same sentence.

Calgary got a super tame return for Hanafin who was going to be in a similar contract spot and was a way way better player this past season. He shouldnt get an 8 year extension from us either because hes not at all a fit, and is by far the most expendable piece on our blueline. He played propped-up, pillow-soft minutes in arizona and put up good but not elite results. His statisitical and analytical profile has him pretty clearly painted as a #3-#4 defenseman on a good team and this year has done nothing but reinforce that.

He also just staight-up wasn't the best defenseman on the PP. He couldn't operate the top of the umbrella because hes a shooter, and he was worse at distributing the puck than Chabot and Sanderson by a big gap. He was a fine shooting option on the PP2 but thats a super replaceable role.

1. If we trade Chychrun, the other team will be getting a full season out of him + an extension.

Vegas only got Hanifin for about 20 games before extending him.

2. Chychrun produced more than any other Sens defenceman on the powerplay both per 60 minutes and throughout the course of the season.

IMO, that should make him the best Sens defenceman on the PP.

3. If Ottawa completely flops on trading or extending Chychrun, then Steve Staios is Pierre Dorion 2.0.

i'm elated. wanted no part of tampa, much prefer the toronto matchup.

are you always so easily rattled? someone disagrees with you so you try to lash out and change topic? very weak.

Pretty happy finishing 5th in the league in points in a rebuilding year where we lost our captain and our second line center while having no cap room to replace them. Sucks that we didn’t play well for two periods last night, but was encouraged by the third period.

FWIW, I'm open to making this trade if Ottawa moves 1 of Forsberg / Korpisalo.

There's no "lashing out" here.

Wouldn’t removing the retention do the same thing cap wise?

My assumption is if you retained on Forsberg, you might get a late round pick for him.

Cap wise, Ullmark at 5 million + the cap hit of whoever replaces Chychrun on the roster >>>>>> Chychrun at 2.3 million + Forsberg at 1.375 million.

laugh Linus Ullmark is heading for the wrong side of 30, Ullmark isn't getting Jakob Chychrun at 50% retained. And Ullmark isn't waiving for Ottawa either.

I think the primary point of value in both the hanafin & cychyrun deals (if they are both signing 8 year deals) is going to lie in the 8 years of contract they are signing, not the 20-40 or 60 games they play before that. Its maybe a small added bonus, but not the primary value of the deal.

chychun may have produced the most, but i dont think he was at all the most valuable piece on the PP. Our PP structure relies on the defensemen being able to facilitate play from the middle, and to me he was the 4th best at doing that behind chabot sanderson and even brannstrom in his super limited PP time. His PP value lies in his shooting, and because hes a shooter hes likely going to get more points than the facilitators.

I dont think you can at all put staios (whos likely not going to be the GM anyways) into the same conversation as dorion if a chychrun trade flops, especially given people on this website are setting insane expectations on what a return is going to look like. PD pigeonholed him by acquiring a d-man we didnt need at an insane price, hes just cleaning up the mess and situating this team for a better outlook

So you are retaining on both how? Why not just trade them straight up and Boston deals with the salary.

Ullmark ($5M) for Chycrun (4.6M) and Forsberg (2.7M)

It takes away about $1.5M in incremental cap space from Boston, but so what, I’d rather do Ullmark and a 3rd for Chycrun with no goalie involvement personally,
