I personally wouldn’t but everyone has their opinions. I also think TOR would want more pieces to help them now, not more flippable assets or futures.

Not to mention the cap gymnastics that would be needed the following years with an extension.

No one is going to give you that for Marner.

He's a rental, with an 11 mil cap hit.

A Teams that aren't real contenders aren't going to give up assets for that.
B Teams that are contenders don't have 11 mil in cap space to make it work.

You have a very small group of teams that can make it work, and how much cap is moved back and forth will be significant.

Look at two of the most recent trades.
EK to the penguins. They got a 1st and a whole lot of cap dumps and they had to retain 1.5 mil.
Why, no team had 11.5 mil in cap space. This is for a guy with 4 years of term on his deal and came off a hell of a year.

Guentzel to CAR, 2nd a mid 6 winger who was struggling, and a few B prospects. Jake was a rental and came at a much smaller cap hit.

Neither one of those trades suggest TOR is getting anywhere close to what their fan base thinks they are getting for Rental Marner.
So first thing is first in trading Marner..... How much is TOR retaining? Because if it's 0. Your return is going to be little. As no one has the cap.
If you are retaining 50%... you probably get a return like Guentzel above. A mid 6 guy to balance the cap, a 2nd and a B prospect or 2.
Again limited by the number of contending teams who can actually make a trade happen.

The most realistic way to get a Marner trade happen is to have a three team trade

Yes marner, absolutely yes. I doubt that's the deal but within reason I'd do it. It would have to come with an extension which is the real hang up.

I wouldn't mortgage the future for Marner. I like the player and would attempt to sign him off he hit free agency though.

Nah. Raymond actually shows up when the team needs to win a game. Mitch doesn't.

Well you still need more to add, Maybe Debrincat
And even this trade without DeBrincat or Raymond is still better than more than half the leafs trades (I have seen 1 for 1 trades for Karlsson and Sauros)

You're talking to the wrong guy. I wouldn't do this in the first place for a guy who's overpaid, is about to be UFA, and doesn't show up when it matters.

Leafs would never trade him in division

I would expect that as well.

That management group still seems convinced that their cap structure isn't the problem.

Pretty sure your best team in three decades has 1 more series win in those 8 years than us.

Probably not something I'd brag about. Good chance we're back in a Conference Final before you.

that could be, but then someone has to pay for the retention.
Either way, moving 11 million in cap isn't easy. The harder it is to trade a guy, the less the return is going to be.
A lot of unrealistic expectations of a return of a rental on a contract like that.

How about you make the playoffs this decade before spouting off about conference finals 😂

I’m willing to be patient and build a contender.

Beats blowing your core’s window on 1st round exit after 1st round exit after 1st round exit. 🤣

8 years is beyond patient; that’s next level incompetence 😂.
Our core is in their prime champ; you should know that better than most since you finish behind us every year. But glad you are patient because you’ll be finishing behind us for a few more years yet 💪

2014-2018 sure was. You've got that right. But that's Edmonton's problem now.

Your core is in their prime and on their way to get spanked out of the first round, AGAIN? Sheesh. Dunno that that's something I'd be championing, bud. tears of joy

I bet it'll get better when you hand Mitchy a $13M-$14M extension, though.

Would you rather Marner at 12M or Chiarot, Holl and Copp for a combined 13 Mil wink

That kind of depth would be nice for Toronto. Chiarot would be their 2nd best defenseman and Copp might get their PK out of the bottom 10 lmaooooo.

Calling Justin Holl and Ben Chiarot depth is very generous of you. Let me guess Petry is still useful too right? Whatever helps you cope wink

Marner would be the best Wings player in the past decade.

Not much coping needs to be done. We're on the way back up, and haven't blown our window at our first Cup in 55+ years.

Yeah, and when it comes to playoffs, he's about as invisible as the Red Wings over the last decade, too. OOF. tears of joy tears of joy tears of joy
