3 way deal

Team: 2024-25 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 28, 2024
Published: Apr. 28, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Marner likely won't jump too much in salary next deal, so this doesn't stress the team's cap situation as much as you might think at first

Trades
BUF
  1. Marner, Mitchell
Additional Details:
Buffalo fell short of expectations this season, but between Tampa showing signs of slowing down and the second wildcard spot seemingly being up for grabs, picking up a star for futures that won't be in play for at least one more season should be on the Sabres' front office's mind. Marner is a 26 year old who's shown his two way ability and playmaking skills time and time again, and though his playoff showings haven't been all too glorious, Buffalo needs to make it there in the first place before complaining about his post season impact. Between the cap going up and his play being unimpressive to say the least, it's unlikely he gets more than $11 mil, which isn't bad for a 70 assist pk1 pp1 guy.
TOR
  1. Östlund, Noah
  2. Rosén, Isak
  3. Savoie, Matthew
  4. 2026 1st round pick (BUF)
Additional Details:
Skips over Toronto for Calgary in 3 way deal (Leafs acquire Weeger and Andersson)

Calgary is stuck between a rock and a hard place with their current roster construction. No big name prospects, no top end talent, bad contracts, the whole 9 yards for a team destined to enter a massive rebuild. With this trade, they offload the Weeger deal and remove any potential mess that would come from an Andersson extension while getting back 3 futures with incredible upside and a first.

I was definitely thinking that when I first put it together, but you can't use a bad playoff performance to discredit a guy who was a selke finalist a year ago, constantly scraps 100 points, and is only 26. I also didn't see Rosen and value him as a first and thought that because of the sheer quantity of potential top 6 guys you have you might be more willing to move a couple to open up more space for them in the lineup

rosen is an ahl all star and just turned 21 a few weeks ago.

he was a top 15 pick. he has significant value.

ostlund was a 1st in 2022, he is playing in the ahl playoffs right now on the top line, he turned 20 a few weeks ago.

we all know who savoie is.

Ur kinda trading our entire future for a guy who may not even resign. Yikes. I may be interested in Marner but certainly not for that

The issue is that Marner has one year left on his deal, then You will have to sign him to a major contract where the majority of it will be outside of his prime.

This deal assumes he can get something done with Buffalo, even an extension before the trade is possible if it helps get it done. I can see how him being a UFA is scary tho. On the out of prime part, an 8 year extension would see him until he's 34-35, which isn't Marleau type old, Tavares is 33 and still put up 65 and is far more impactful than people give him credit for, so in Marner's case he plays a style of hockey that isn't physically demanding and probably will help him hold up and not regress too early, either way you're getting prime Marner 6 of the 8 years
