The Jets can't afford to throw away that much in assets for one year of a winger that will never extend in Winnipeg and won't make a difference at all for the Jets.

He's not waiving to a bottom feeder or an undesirable place. Buffalo, Winnipeg, forget it. Options are very limited.
Most likely, he walks in a year and the Leafs move on without a likely 13M plus player.

I don't think this does it lol, Ehlers is not as good as marner and is injury prone. Pionk of course is better than Liljegren but not the difference maker in this deal. Leafs would probably decline as they can pursue free agent defensemen that have slightly more cap hit and are better than Pionk without having to give up a franchise winger and decent young right shot defenseman. We only end up saving about a million or two on this package for a massive offensive downgrade.

Honestly a pretty quality trade, I think if you replace Torgersson with a better prospect then it's a pretty fair deal. Maybe Salomonsson, or drop the 3rd and make it Lucius?

As others (and yourself) have stated this comes down to whether Marner would waive or not. It's also probably a safe bet that at least 5/6 teams on Pionk's NTC are Canadian teams. I would not be shocked if it's all 6 of them being that he's American. I also have a hard time seeing Winnipeg competing with that blue line though. I would just keep Schmidt for the final year and not sign Hakanpaa
