Description
Starting to come around to the idea of bridging Mo and locking up Raymond long term. Would help us save a few bucks int the short term to remain competitive over the next few years instead of taking a step back while the young guys transition in. I don't see Seider getting significantly better from here, meaning he will not jump from a 8 million dollar defenseman to a 12 million dollar guy. His offensive game just isn't there. That makes him the preferred choice for a bridge over Raymond who could see a massive jump in his production based off his performance this year. If we can lock up Raymond for 8.5x8 I think we do it then maybe try to get Seider in the 7x5 range instead of the 9x8 range. The guys on the WWP had a good discussion about this and I tend to agree that if you are to bridge one of them Seider is that guy at this point. My preference is to lock up both as long as possible but I don't think we have the cap space to do that and remain a wild card team.

Still some cap room to go get another bottom 6 forward if we don't want to play all the rookies just yet.

Not sure on Calgary as the destination but thought they could be interested in a guy to play bottom 6 minutes that they can flip at next years deadline. I don't see them being in the market for long term UFAs at this point.

Doesn't Seider have arbitration rights? Why would he sign this? I could see this cap hit shorter term, but signing it for five years seems stupid.

Five years isn't a bridge...

It's also a terrible deal to sign your franchise D-Man to. Only thing worse would be 4 years.

Hawks aren't giving up a 3rd and 4th for Valeno's rights

3 years is a bridge deal, not 5.

I like the idea of a bridge too but this doesn't make that much sense for either side.

That's probably fair value for Veleno. But Chicago doesn't seem like the right destination. Hawks have at least four 3rd line C prospects in their system already. Not sure why they'd pay for another.

It would walk him to UFA at 28, much easier to sign another massive deal at 28 than at 31. More and more players opting for shorter deals so they can double dip and sign a new deal when the cap goes up again.

Hawks were just a rebuilding placeholder team for veleno, could be any team looking for a young 3/4 C

Allows Seider to him UFA at his prime if he wants. It seems like more players are interested in taking those middle year deals so they can hit UFA again in their prime.

Looking it up, Seider is one year from arbitration. He's stupid to sign this contract. Take something shorter and then cash in because at the rate he is going, he's worth a lot more.

Quinn Hughes signed a 7.8x6 a few years back and had better offensive numbers than Seider. Sure Seider's defensive game is more refined but putting up points gets you paid in the league. Two years from July 1 Hughes will be able to sign an extension. He will be looking at 12m+ on an 8 year deals on his next deal, probably wouldn't be able to get that kind of money and term if he had to wait another two years and hit UFA in his 30s. From a player perspective the point is cashing in on 2 huge deals and taking the bigger deal later in your contract when the cap has went up and your a better player instead of early in your career and having to settle for a 5-6 year term later on.

Hughes is a LD which gets paid less than RD to begin with and only played 119 games. Seider is at 246 with harder deployment. Hughes also signed at 9.63% cap and that figure would put Seider at $8.44m/yr. You're not close.
