Leafs 24 Offseason - Marner to the Ducks

Created by: Leafs23
Team: 2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 5, 2024
Published: May 5, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I have no idea how the Leafs, Marner, or GIbson would feel about this but as far as Marner trades go this feels fairly logical. Ducks are actively looking to add to their top 6. Marner gets to be in a nice place to live with zero pressure. He fits the Ducks timeline well, and they can pay him as much as they like. With the extension, this secures and improves on a spot that Vatrano may leave open if he leaves next year.

I fully understand that Gibson has not been a good goalie, and a big part of that falls on him. Part of that may be a lack of confidence in the players around him. He can not be viewed as a solution but more of an upside play to pair with Woll, who will still be the 1A. Ducks get to give Dostal the keys.

A potentially high first is necessary value added to the trade that could give the leafs a player to further their contention window. The Leafs also maintain good flexibility for both deadline moves and future years with their upcoming prospects such as Cowan. I do think that it doesn't make sense to leave as much cap open as I did, but I am not sure how they would address that, I like giving Robby the consistent opportunity to contribute or else be traded at the deadline, and I think leaving the 3C open for a Cowan 8 game trial before giving it to Minten midway through the season makes alot of sense.

This is just an idea. Please give actually valuable insight.

I don't know whether Marner would like to spend a year in Southern California but I do know that Gibson won't go to Toronto and small-market Anaheim won't retain $3.2 million on him.

We can give Dostal the keys while keeping Gibson in the fold.

Frankly, I'm not sure Verbeek would even want Marner on the roster. Doesn't hit, doesn't seem to have heart of a champion, can't run his own line, can't rise to meet the occasion, already paid $11 mil and likely wants a raise in a year when he probably deserves a pay cut.

Right now Marner is reading as Kessel 2.0. an important contributor to a team, but not a guy you build around.

Marner has the 12th highest cap hit in the league next season. Every player ahead of him either signed their big money deal as their third contract, is a Leaf, or is Connor McDavid.
