the buyout speculation is absurd lol. Never ever ever gonna happen

He was incredibly misused this season between his two coaches and constant line changes. Is he worth his contract? No. But he's better than fans give him credit for.

And yea he didn show up in the playoffs but its not like Marner did either. The PLD overreaction is insane

Wow this is rough, this is a guy in talks for a buyout before his deal even kicks in. On his current contract he's legitimately a negative asset. Not to mention he clearly has problems with his attitude and has tried to force his way out of every organization he has ever been with.

Columbus would retain half on JT to send him to a contender at a reasonable hit, but we're not about to give up assets to acquire him. No chance he re-signs here, if he were to waive at all, and he'd arguably be only the 2nd-best center/30-year-old current captain on our team. Doesn't fit the timeline.

Counterpoint: we need leadership types and he's demonstrated before he can do that, even if that's in question of late because Toronto. And that's sufficient retention that I'd call it worthwhile. I'd be tempted, frankly.

I think it's just a lateral move, though. It's not a long-term deal, we're basically sacrificing the TDL return from Provorov for the TDL return of Tavares. Maybe that's more, maybe it's less. Neither would likely be on the team through March. Plus, now we'd have a center depth of Fantilli -> Jenner -> Tavares -> Sillinger -> Voronkov -> Kuraly just to play two of them on the wing while forcing Mateychuk into the lineup game 1.

I'm all for bringing in veterans for leadership and moving Provorov, but this one just doesn't make a lot of sense for the team's current build IMO.
