The guy that was 3rd in team scoring didn't help the Pens much? No, the problem with this trade isn't that the Pens aren't paying enough, it's that they don't have the RHD depth to part with Karlsson and Marner doesn't have an incentive to sign in PIT long-term.

clearly some NHL teams think he is. I personally agree with you, but I also don't think the leafs are going to get an impactful return when it comes to NHL players unless they're taking back big money. Otherwise I think it's just going to be a mid first.

As Rip said above, it's a bad deal for the Leafs. The purpose of a Marner is gain cap space immediately not to be cap hamstrung the Leafs with three years of EK. But it's highly unlikely that any teams can make that criteria so Mitch remains a Leafs next season.
