Tavares feeds Ovi for goals record next season

Created by: markykins1
Team: 2023-24 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: May 15, 2024
Published: May 15, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I know most Caps fans here would say no, get Marner. He would cost a ton of picks and assets. Tavares for one year to help Ovi is the reason. Caps keep their prospects and picks in this scenario. Not sure how Leafs fans see this but getting 11 million off the books and a mid first rounder would be nice I think.
Trades
WSH
  1. Tavares, John
Additional Details:
Caps take salary off TML hands and give Ovi a better partner to try and break the goals record next season.
TOR
  1. Jensen, Nick
  2. 2024 1st round pick (WSH)
Additional Details:
Toronto gets 17th pick and RHD they need and this helps the Caps make room for another player.

I don't think you understand that the risk isn't "Tavares might not be very good," but rather "we may be trading away a pick that turns into a top defenseman or top forward." Jensen for Tavares one for one is the most I'd do. The leafs are desperate to make changes. The caps have the maneuverability as is.

Well, if they could get this done without a first going, of course. Would love that.

As an owner and businessman (not a fan) would you pay Stamkos $10M more than JT in actual salary?

Fair question.
I guess it depends who's team I own...if its a team that needs help getting to the cap ceiling, JT would be the way to go (because as you said, only 900k in actual salary). If its a team (like the Caps for example), I'd take the better player (in this case Stamkos, all day everyday) because no matter what, its ~11m against the cap. And Stamkos is much better imo.

Really bad and unfair trade for the caps. There is no benefit. You say we get to keep our picks and prospects by trading for Tavares yet you include the 24 1st?

This makes no sense

He only has value if he's retained. Which is why I'd be happy for Chicago to pick up the Tavares tab for future considerations then flip him at the deadline half retained. At 11 mil he is 100% a cap dump. Arizona is gone. Actual nhl teams aren't taking an 11 mil cap hit from a 60 point player no matter how cheap his actual salary is.

Good points. Do you or anyone who's posted here think Tavares will be traded somehow this offseason or not? I am genuinely interested now if this happens or not.

Well, you got me there but I was comparing it in relation to those who might want/go for Marner instead. He would be had only for a boatload I think.

I like your initial logic of not trading away futures for now when we have at best a mid team. But then we cant turn around and trade 17OA for one year of Tavares lol

I think marner getting moved is more likely. Not confident that Tavares would waive his nmc and even less confident that Toronto management will force the issue.

This is a business and real money is a factor for most NHL teams. Fun fact The NHL made the Leaf's shut down their facilities in the summer and not allow them to offer it to players and prospects to train because OTHER NHL teams thought it was unfair instead of paying to open their facilities.

I'll make it as simple as i can. Teams with cap space are rebuilding and have no need for Tavares. Teams that need Tavares don't have cap space.

Rebuilding teams need veteran leadership to show their young players how to be good pros and still want to provide a good product on the ice to sell tickets
