Definitely but a sensible or reasonable ACGM. There's no "sensible" reason for the Jets to give Ehlers away for nothing.

You really think that offer gets Ehlers?

It's easily outbid by 20 other teams.

I don't know if Ehlers is even available but you'll have to pay up to get him.

1 year at 6 mil AAV is a bargain for a 60 point guy and the speed and skill Ehlers brings.

Not sure why Coyotes do the deal. And why would Marner waive in his contract year. Always strange that Leaf fan have this distain for Timmins but think a 23 year old college player is going to an NHLer in October.

What would be a good framework for an Ehlers to TOR trade? I figured they'd need a RHD in case DeMelo/Miller leave, someone young and controllable, + a relatively cheap bottom six F.

What's more sensible? Marner for Ehlers? Adding picks/prospects? Ehlers for Lily made most sense to me but I'm willing to add on to that offer

Coyotes will want to compete right away. They'll have the cap space to extend Marner as their superstar + only have to give up one roster player for him. Their GM also said they'd be "aggressive" with their picks to try to improve the team quickly.

Marner probably waives to get a fresh start and a long term home in Utah

Does a Marner for Ehlers framework offer work better? I'm not really sure what the Jets would want in an Ehlers return tbh

That the leafs got for a 6th round pick. If he was that good 30 other teams would have offered the canes a lot more.

I don't think Ehlers gets moved but if Chevy can't re-sign him then he'll have to take what he can get.

You'll have to ask Jets fans what their needs are.

Toronto doesn't really have anything that works for Ehlers. The Jets need a top 4 RHD or 2C with term or team control, Toronto doesn't have those pieces.

Bottom pairing defenseman and bottom sixers don't fill any need for the Jets.

I guess your belief that Marner is a "superstar" is the issue. If Marner is a superstar, there must be at least 30 in the league. How about Keller. He has 20 less points a season than Marner and he doesn't play with Matthews, Tavares, Nylander or on a great PP. Also Keller scores more goals than Marner. Marner is just fair value at 11m at best.

Leafs fans more than any other FANatics think ALL their draft pick/prospects are going to be NHLers.
Now I wish young Webber all the best, but highly unlikely he is ready for NHL in October or even in 24/25.
For cap reasons, the Leafs are hoping that Webber and Niemela are NHL capable Dmen in 25/26. Same with Minten and Cowan. Really the best scenario for the Leafs is they are NHL good in 25/26.

One reason IMO the Leafs best shot at the Cup is in 25/26. Marner and Tavares off the books. So that 22m can be used elsewhere, and so young guys on cheap contracts will play above their contracts.
But it's not like the Leaf get free cap when Marner and Tavares depart. Knies, Woll and Holmberg will be guys that should be deserving of more $$$$.

IDC if you consider him a superstar or not but he'd be their best player and someone they'd want locked up longterm

Agree, in 25-26 there is a lot of d-men with contracts up that could be available. I don't think the leafs should be signing any of the UFA d-men this season except maybe Roy. I'm hoping JT will comeback and do the Bergeron 1M contract to help the team have a chance to win. Put JT on the 3rd or even 4th line at that cap hit and he would be a steal with his production on the wing not center. They might have to wait and trade Marner at the TDL letting him know they won't be re-signing him. Double retention at a cap hit around 2.75M could get a reasonable return from a cup contender.

The Leafs don't have any picks in the first four rounds in the summer of 2025, so tanking by trading Marner kinda looks ugly. But you are correct, Marner's best trade value might be at TDL 2025. HIs $$$$ contract is a lot easier for teams to absorb. Might as go all the way.....Marner, McCabe and any others on UFA expiring contracts. But if the Leafs are in Cup "contention" do they do it?

They will be a playoff team but they won't be a cup contender. The bottom 6 can't score and the defense will be near the bottom of any playoff team. They also have to move on from Jarnkrok for 25-26, his 5 goals in 93 playoff games is the perfect example of a ghost.

I highly doubt they will want a futures heavy deal for Ehlers. They are trying to compete now.
