Description
I'd imagine a lot of people aren't open to trading the fan favourite Brown, but seemingly this makes the team better for this year. Tanev is the perfect fit for this blueline, and JVR is not an enticing piece for the rebuilding Canucks. Enter Connor Brown. Second year player who scored 20 in his rookie year and still has room to grow. Brings a lot of intangibles outside of scoring production too. I think this gives the Canucks a very important controllable piece, and the Leafs the shutdown guy they need.

So what do people think of the idea overall?

Good Idea but I think the Canucks are looking to use Tanev if anything to make a bigger splash. If it doesnt include a top Line guy then im not sure Benning makes the deal.

Actually, I would totally approve that trade from the Leafs' perspective. It's not clear if the Canucks would do it, but they are definitely weak on the wings, so they obtain a promising player who'd be a very good fit for them. Great suggestion.

Neither team would do this. Why do Toronto need prime d-men? Simply cannot afford Tanev without losing Bozak and JVR to free agency, and Gardiner in 2 years to free agency, not worth IMO.

Reminder, they built this team we have now around drafting and developing, the previous 10 years we tried to shortcut it with moves like this.

vancouver can get such a better deal for tanev, he's like a top 5 defensive defenseman in the league with a good contract and you wanna trade an unsigned 23 year old 36 point scorer

I don't really see this as a shortcut though. I believe JVR/Bozak are good as gone already. Tanev or not. Not sure the ~750k more that Tanev makes compared to Brown changes much cap wise. Also, this allows for drafting and developing. We have a surplus of RW currently, and this makes room for Kapanen that we otherwise don't have. It's never a perfect situation trading a player like Brown, but Tanev is a perfect fit.

You may be right on them getting a bit more in this deal, and that's not a big problem it can be worked out with this is a frame. I do think you're undervaluing Brown though. He brings more to the table than his point total suggests. He is a heart and soul guy that is a coaches dream. He plays solid defense, and is also a persistent backchecker. Keep in mind last year was his rookie season and there is room to grow and that is an ideal piece to an organization.
