Taking advantage of Wings cap

Created by: jwerner
Team: 2017-18 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 10, 2017
Published: Aug. 10, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The best way for the Rangers to fill their void at center is by trading with cap pressed teams. Look no further than the Red Wings. It's anticipated that after signing Athanasiou they will be over the cap. It's really very similar to the circumstances that sparked the bozak rumors. Anyway the rangers new abundance of puck moving defenseman makes Pionk expendable and a player of his profile is just the type of defenseman the wings are looking to add. Win for both teams. Rangers get their center that can put them in the contender conversation and the red wings get a promising puck moving defenseman and picks to help with what should be an inevitable rebuild. Yes, the wings likely first look to move helm or sheahan, but moving them will get them far less of a return (likely only a single pick in rounds 2 or 3). Nielsen is the only way they get a guaranteed puck moving defense prospect, along with picks. Yes rangers fans I know that adding Nielsen makes it basically impossible to make our "run" for Tavares next year but let's be real that was never gunna happen anyway
Trades
1.
NYR
  1. 2018 3rd round pick (BOS)
2.
NYR
  1. Nielsen, Frans ($1,500,000 retained)
DET
  1. Pionk, Neal
  2. 2018 2nd round pick (NYR)
  3. 2019 3rd round pick (NYR)
Additional Details:
Red Wings do the trade because of bad cap situation and they are in need of good puck moving defenseman. Although Pionk won't make a large immediate impact, the potential is there. Although Pionk was a highly coveted signing for the rangers he is expendable because of the overload of defense prospects and the rangers need for puck moving defensemen is met with shattenkirk, skjei, deangelo, day

The rangers cannot take on any more long term money thus Neilson cant work. I would love to ave him for one year but he comes with 5 more, WAYYYYY too much even at that cap hit. We need a stop gap for 1 year and thats it because even with 3.5 million only on him that wont leave enough money to Re-sign all the RFAs and McD. The rafers face a serious cap crunch next season due to all the re-signings.

Even then why not just give Andersson a shot...im pretty sure he's better than Nielson or close to it even without NHL experience. He did play in a mens league just like Matthews did. so why not try it out.

I see your point here. However, Nielsen doesn't have a full NMC, just a partial one. He can only name 10 teams he can't be traded to. It's incredibly reasonable to suggest he has around a 50 point season. That being said if the rangers truely won't have the cap space to fit in they're free agents next year with Nielsen on the team, they won't have much of a problem at all in sending his contract elsewhere, whether it be after next year or in the future. Just a thought.
