Leafs don't want just any right handed defenseman, they want a good one. Although I think Bozak would be perfect in PIT, We would need Schultz and there's no way that PIT does that with Letang's health concerns
In any world, Leafs would be trading Bozak because of the salary cap. Why would they want someone who makes more?
I've said it once and I'll say it a million times; The Leafs do NOT have a cap situation.
Yes, they're a little tight to the cap.
Yes, it says we're over cap.
But the site hasn't taken into account the LTIR of Horton and Lupul, whichs accounts for a maximum of 10.55 million dollars. Horton is done playing hockey and Lupul just failed a physical in June, so it's not looking promising for him either. They have the ability to keep the entire roster that they currently possess if they truly wanted to.
Now I will admit that the Leafs are a little over-staffed at the forward position, but it's on the wings, not the center position. Everyone who doesn't follow the Leafs can say about Nylander or Komarov or even in some rare cases Marner, but Nylander isn't ready, Komarov doesn't like playing center and in the shortened season wasn't very good at faceoffs, and Marner is a natural RW from everything I've heard, so it's more than likely that's where Babcock will keep him.
There's also the case that Bozak and Kessel had a falling out in the final season Kessel played for Toronto, and I'm not sure the two fixed that issue, but I'm not sure.
In the end, I doubt that the Leafs will move Bozak unless they're getting a roster ready center back or if they're absolutely certain they have a rookie who's ready for the leap (although that's doubtful since it seems that the direction of the Leafs is playoffs rather than extended development).
Now, as for the trade, I'll refer to all I said above, but also that Ruhwedel would more than likely be buried if they did accept it. The first is alright, but considering it's more than likely going to be a pick in the 25-30 range, it's more or less a high second. So all in all, you're trading a player who won't find himself on the roster (useless to the Leafs) and a low value first rounder for a veteran center who ranks among the best in faceoffs and just notched 55 points playing around the NHL average for a third liner (also can't be forgotten that Bozak has an amazing way of creating the best chemistry with the players he plays with, whether it be Kessel, JVR, Marner, Parenteau or even Matthais.)
The trade just doesn't make sense for the Leafs unless there's another pick involved or a good-ish defensemen who's either right handed or is frequent to play on the right side, but even then I'm not sure who Pittsburgh could offer the Leafs that would make sense long term.
