Everything Trouba. The trade and the contract
If everything to do with Trouba is removed and put back to Russel is all the rfa signings realistic?
It's hard to say with any accuracy because the coming season will have a massive, massive impact on next summer's contract negotiations - but I'll try.
Benning and Nurse: might seem strange to group them together because Benning had a much better season than Nurse, but I believe Nurse has the higher ceiling (if he can reach it) and both played very well down the stretch - not much daylight between them in the last 20 games, IMO. If they can continue that great play into the season ahead and even take another step forward, those contracts will be huge bargains, a la Klefbom and Larsson's. But, we all know that young defensemen don't develop in a straight line, so it'll be interesting to watch these two this year. Sekera's injury is a big opportunity for both.
Let's look at it this way, though: if these contracts had to be negotiated this summer rather than next, I would consider it a fair-to-team-friendly deal for Benning, and a slight overpay for Nurse. Teams often slightly overpay young defensemen though, based on potential, so ithe Nurse deal isn't terrible for Edmonton, but a 2 x $1.5MM bridge would be much fairer.
Brossoit: $1M is fair if he can post a .910 over 25 games this year. Any less (or fewer games) and the AAV should come down slightly.
Strome: he isn't worth this contract right now, but in 10 months he might be. If he's able to post 45 points centering a soft-minutes line than he'll be worth at least $3.5M to this organization. Any ice-time shared with McDavid and 1PP time will cloud that picture, though.
Caggiula: he's a very versatile player, can play any forward position and on skill, checking and energy lines. A coach's dream player - think Jarnkrok, for instance. I could see him getting this contract next summer, if things break just right for him this season.
Slepyshev: this one's more of an enigma. He seems to have all the tools, but hasn't been able to unlock his potential yet. He reminds me of Athanasiou in this way - highlight reel moments, but when you look at his body of work over 40+ games it's somewhat lacking. This contract only happens if he has one hell of a season - I'm talking 20+ goals and 40+ points and a lock on a top-6 roster spot.
