Trading a quality player from a position of little depth isn't how you retool. Staal is a top-6 center and the Wild only have 2 of them (Staal and Koivu). JEE and Kunin might turn into top-6 centers, but the also might not. Staal is also on a sweetheart deal, making cap space isn't done by trading away good contracts.
Trade a wing instead, they have a ton of them. The only problem is they fall into the good but not great category. Granlund, Zucker, Coyle, and Nino are all trade-able assets. Kunin, Greenway, Sokolov (I like him a lot), and Kaprizov (in 3 years) are all possible replacements in the pipeline.
It's hard to get a quality center, they just don't hit the market. A trade is possible, but even those are hard to do. 1C's don't become UFA signings until they are old. Other than tanking for a McDavid/Matthews and getting lucky in the draft lottery it's a crap shoot that even top-10 picks develop into the 1/2C they are projected to be.
