I am sick of being a sabres fan
Can everyone stop saying that teams like the Devils and Rangers have "passed" the Sabres in their respective rebuilds? Not a single game has been played yet this season. Seems very premature to say either of those teams have a "much stronger team." But even if that turns out to be true, neither of these teams truly tore down their roster like the Sabres did in 2014 (when the true rebuild started), so it's really not fair to compare them. They've also made the playoffs much more recently than the Sabres, and were NEVER as bad as the Sabres were at the start of the rebuild.
Let's also not forget that both of those teams' seasons lie on the backs of many unproven talents (Hughes, Gusev, Kakko, Kravtsov, etc). Remember when everyone penciled Buffalo in for the playoffs in the 2015 offseason after they acquired ROR, Kane and Lehner, and had two promising rookies in Eichel and Reinhart coming up? Injuries, team chemistry, and overall luck are huge factors in a team's success, and nobody really knows how good a team is going to be until the season starts.
I think it's hilarious that every time there's a move in the league, people **** on Botts for not doing anything even though he's acquired MoJo, Jokiharju, Vesey, and Miller for peanuts. They're not stars, but they're legitimate upgrades to the roster. The reason why the rebuild has taken so long is because GMTM rushed it by signing big-name players while ignoring the depth and defensive issues on the team. It's really been two rebuilds: one rushed attempt, and one cleaning up the other's mess.

Simple Solution for NYR
Buffalo already has Miller, Montour, Ristolainen, Bogosian, Nelson and Jokiharju as RHD candidates going into this season. Can't see them acquiring another one. I also think you are a little low on DeAngelo's contract.

Sabres Playoffs
If Ristolainen fetches that, I might try MoJo on the top line and Ehlers on the 2nd line to spread the talent out a little more.
I'm probably in the minority, but I don't think playoffs are out of the question. This team had no depth last year and the additions of Vesey, MoJo, and Olofsson will help a lot more than most people think. The defense has also improved with Miller, a full season of Montour, and possibly Joker. Also, don't underestimate the impact a new coach can have on the team. Maybe Dahlin messes around and puts up 70 points and Eichel breaks 100. Ultimately I think a lot of it will come down to goaltending and health, but they have certainly improved.

Possible Top 10s for 2019-20
IMO
Eichel>Aho, Pettersson, Seguin
Also could make an argument for Bergeron and ROR over some of those centers, based on their linemates being on this list
I'd probably include Binnington in the goalies and Josi in defensemen
I think Kakko will record between 50-60 points this year, which is good, but probably not quite a top winger yet
I haven't seen Fabbro play, but just based on what I've read I'm not sure if he will have the same impact as guys like Makar, Dahlin, Heiskanen did

Vesey for Nylander rumor
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Spanky227</b></div><div>I get where you are coming from but this was reported to be on the table for the rangers to accept. I think buffalo would rather have a known quantity than just potential, as Vesey would be a good fit for Buffalo (regardless that he spurned you guys in the past)</div></div>
Where was it reported that this was on the table? I've only seen Dreger's comments from this morning, where he was discussing what the Sabres were up to. Said he hadn't heard much about a Risto trade, mentioned Buffalo was still interested in Vesey, then said there was speculation that Nylander could be on a move. I don't think he said (or meant) it would be for Vesey necessarily, but I don't know if there are other reports out there.

They're not true, Dreger's comment was taken out of context. He was discussing the Sabres' discussions lately and mentioned Vesey and then said Nylander could be moved, but not in a Vesey deal

Sabres say no, Asplund is their top prospect at center and is likely more valuable to them because of his position. You can get more for Kreider.

Next season idea
No thanks from Buffalo. Still have Hutton for two more years and Ullmark is an RFA this year. Even if Ullmark is traded (doubtful), that first is likely in the top half of the draft and I don't think they're ready to give that up for another aging goalie.

This. He's super talented but he definitely needs to bulk up, and we can't rush our prospects anymore.

Yeah that'd be huge. On the podcast he said it was tempting to pick Suzuki to have the brothers play together but he said there's too much of a talent difference in his opinion to pass on Krebs. And he'll only miss about a month of action next year with the injury, so it's crazy that teams would pass on him because of that haha

Reinhart at C
If the Sabres acquire Zucker (which I don't think would cost as much as your proposal), I'm packaging Sheary ++ to get a top 6 RW instead of signing Connolly. I'm on board with the Donskoi signing though, and I agree that Sam should get another shot at center with competent linemates.

What's wrong with the return? You're not giving up any high picks or either of Liljegren or Sandin for a solid defenseman, that's a huge win.

I think if NYR retains on Shattenkirk they could get a pick, maybe not a 2nd rounder or maybe if it was a '21 or '22 pick instead. But yeah there's no way the Bruins are giving up Carlo. I also don't see Tampa Bay giving up their 1st just to get rid of 1 year of Callahan.

His development has been... strange. You gotta remember that when he was at Minnesota he was less than a year removed from playing high school hockey, not exactly the toughest competition. He was actually pretty good defensively this year for the Sabres (where he was rushed into a 2C role). He was and still is pretty weak, which IMO is what really limited his offensive production with the Gophers and the Sabres. But his skillset and vision make it hard for me to envision him on the wing.
