MAX Eichel offer before surgery
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GoodIdeaAtTheTime</b></div><div>Sabres decline. Plenty of NHL players have had disc herniations and a number of players have had fusion. So good work on getting your info wrong...</div></div>
First, have any players of Eichel's caliber done fusion surgery on their necks? I'd understand if it was in the back. Losing a bit of movement/flexibility in one portion of the back is not as big of a deal as it is in the neck.
Second, if surgeries to fix the herniated discs in NHL players are so routine, then why do the Sabres have such a risk management mindset that they want to maximize their return for him in a trade before he even gets a surgery? But seriously, injuries happen. It happened to Buffalo's star player. Both the team and the player seem to want to part ways. But the Sabres seems to be demanding that any trade partner is the one who needs to assume all the risk for the injured player. But he's a Sabres player, and the Sabres should have to assume the risk. Either let him get the surgery & trade him for the higher asking price after he fully returns to form (with the risk of him never returning to form), or trade him prior to surgery for much less than said higher asking price because his future capabilities are still somewhat in question. Those are the options. Instead, they're asking for the best of both options, which would leave their trade partner taking on all the risk.
Right now, the Sabres are sending complete opposite messages. The return for which they are asking in a trade is essentially based on the expectation of a 100% recovery to his previous playing form. But how they're dealing with the surgery situation indicates they are not confident enough in a 100% recovery to trade him at the end of his post-op recovery.

DrouinDomi as 3C
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Inthewrist</b></div><div>Apparently, CBJ are actively trying to get rid of Domi. No takers.
Byron and Domi are out for the same length of time. Domi and Byron will make the same amount of money roughly, although in Byron's case, it is over 2 years. CBJ have no real spot for Domi, however, Byron could be useful as bottom 6 guy, plus a 3rd and 7th.</div></div>
Well said. If CBJ wants to move Domi, they might be really hard pressed to find a destination willing to take him. Seattle passing on him in the expansion draft means they didn't want him in exchange for nothing, but also that no other team was willing to trade a 2nd or 3rd round pick to Seattle in exchange for them selecting & promptly trading him.
Sorry to buddy over there who thinks taking on Byron's contract is worth at least a 2nd rounder, but taking on Domi's contract at this point is worth at least a 3rd rounder. So the compromise on swapping players + 3rd rounder and 7th rounder to CBJ isn't far off from what I would offer them for Domi. I think I had it projected as Domi + 2022 4th rounder for Byron + 2nd rounder & 5th (or 6th) rounder.

Habs dont care
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Habs4ever</b></div><div>Won’t happen. Both those trades are not happening</div></div>
Yeah, to be fair, an asset of similar value to Kulak (but not a LD) + a 2nd rounder might get the deal done considering Max is a UFA at the end of the season and will apparently miss significant time at the start of the season due to rehabing an injury. That's without mentioning that he doesn't have any signing bonus for the 2021-22 season, and his actual Salary is 13.2% (700K) higher than his Cap Hit. So, Columbus can save more money by trading him than it appears at first glance. Smaller market teams may need to make those sacrifices in coming out of the Covid shutdown hampered seasons with largely reduced revenues.
That being said, if you're trying unload a 3rd pairing or 7th D who shoots left, Columbus ain't a team which will take that asset. They've already got 6 NHL (or borderline NHL) caliber LD on their depth chart. That's not even considering any on their AHL team which may prove to be ready for a shot at a roster spot. Unfortunately, although Kulak is a serviceable defenceman, the abundance of assets already at that position and in the same role which Kulak would fall into, render his value to Columbus down to nearly zero.

MAX Eichel offer before surgery
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Oodz</b></div><div>So 2 cap dumps, one average prospect one unheard of prospect, and two picks for a top-15 player...nice</div></div>
Uhmmm sick take bud.
First, they aren't two caps dumps, nor is Farrell unheard of. Maybe you just didn't even bother looking into him. There are many prospects on teams I don't follow who seem "unheard of" and then turn out to be studs. Like I had never heard of Guentzel until he was lighting **** up! Doesn't mean he was irrelevant. I just never had a reason to look into him. But I would have done so before dismissing him as basically a meaningless prospect for the mere fact that I, very notably NOT an NHL GM, hadn't heard of him.
Second, even if Anderson and Byron are considered as 2 cap dumps (some could argue that they are both a little bit overpaid), they are both still very useful and serviceable NHL players. Poehling is looking much improved over the last couple of years, and I think he just needs a change to play C with a couple of good wingers. Or he could play on the wing with a C already in the Sabres organization. As for Farrell, assuming he continues on his improvement trajectory, Buffalo may he able to get a 1st Rounder+ if they decide to trade him at any point next season.
Third, and this goes to the start of the second point, Buffalo has to reach the Cap Floor somehow. It's there for reason. You = 👨🦯🤷♂️🤯🙄🤦♂️

domi petry
Even at that reduced cap hit man, if all 3 big salary boys took 1.9Mil less and Nylander took like 750k-1Mil less, they could afford an excellent RD with a contract like Petry's, and still have 1.0-1.25Mil in cap space left to sign depth forward pieces. Instead, that sh*t was just swallowed right up by the big boys without even so much as a "thank you, sir"

They should have just signed him for less. Do the whole "look man, you got one shot at playing for your childhood team, a team with a wide open window for Stanley Cup runs, making tons of money, all at the same time. But to afford other players that will help us win, you'll have to take 8.5Mil instead off 11. Our ownership will work their tails off to help line up sponsorships for you if you want, but I can't give you over 8.5Mil, cuz then Nylander would want 6.5-7Mil, Matthews will want 10.5+ and so will Marner. We can't build a team around that kind of salary going to 4 guys when we have a superstar defenseman and an elite goalie. Just won't work. Do you want to be another guy who made a lot of money playing hockey? Or do you want to be the guy who led by example, took way less money than they could to play for their childhood team and led them to multiple Stanley Cup Championships? The time to decide on your legacy, begins now."

Yeah, he's like "Hey man, don't worry about Petry, your team could just go bid 10Mil for Pietrangelo so they screw up their cap situation like the Leafs did!"

Oh and two more things:
1) I realize he hasn't played in 3 years, but there's always the small chance that a player's area of injury shows just enough improvement during their pre-season physical that they doesn't qualify for LTIR. If that were to happen, Vegas would be f*cked. However, with this lineup, Montreal could afford the cap hit if that were to happen. Now, I do realize that Clarkson's issues are with degenerative discs in his spine, so the chances he's fit to play are suuuuper slim to none.
2) Apparently it was reported that Vegas asked him to submit his 16 team no-trade list, so even if they don't HAVE to move him it seems like they WANT to.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Poehling</b></div><div>Because Evans isn’t NHL ready, Weal is a NHL player</div></div>
Good eye there about Weal. I hadn't realized I left him out of the lineup. I was working on a ACGM for '20-21 and must have gotten mixed up before publishing this one lol.
Just for the record, in my previous reply when I mentioned a little extra flexibility at the deadline I was referring to taking on Clarkson's salary in addition to retaining salary on Peca.
As for why I even included Clarkson, that's a valid question. Here's your answer:
Honestly, I was going to leave him out and use Montreal's 2020 3rd instead of ANA 4th. But I wanted Montreal to still have a 3rd rounder in 2020. So I threw him in because when you'd already be picking in the range of 74-85 with MTL's 3rd, it could - I repeat, could - make sense for Vegas to move down to the ANA 4th in the 94-102 range even if it only saves the owners $1M in actual salary. (Assuming his $2.25M in signing bonuses for this year are already paid in full, they only have the $1M base salary left to pay him over the course of the season).

It gives them more flexibility for any small tweaks they might want to make at the trade deadline.
& why not give him a shot?

Dudes, Connor is a Top 3 forward. Even when he's in a slump he won't drop past Top 6 minutes. As for Savard, he's definitely a capable defenceman. He's stable and reliable, but he's Top 4 D at the highest on most teams.

I think they put Montour in there as a replacement for Weber, whom they traded away for Mantha. Only issue is that I'd keep Gally over Mantha every day of the week, and Weber > Montour. Gally had skill and drive and plays with emotion. Mantha definitely has skill, but any time I see him play, it seems to be with the tenacity of "if I perform just well enough to make good money, I'll be happy with that"
