I would not. But the assumption a lot of us are running with is that other GMs won't either, and he'll have to decide between taking 4M or so elsewhere or 3.5ish in Colorado, where he is a great fit. Obviously that assessment could be wrong, but I tend to think no one will want to throw big money and term his way when there are so many risks that have been made clear by his inconsistent career.

Even Strength Points Standings
Few thoughts:
1. I guess I was wrong by a lot when I said Hagel wasn't worth a first, regardless of how good his contract was.
2. Kuch is gonna win the Ross but not the Hart. It's a really close race, with three or even four guys deserving of it, but it's going to be the guy who doesn't have one yet. It's just how it works, and it's hard to argue that MacKinnon is somehow a poor choice.
3. I assume Jeannot just barely missed the cut :squintytongue

Kovalenko won't be on the top line. Nix the Toffoli signing, put Kovalenko at 3RW, and re-sign Drouin for 1LW and you're in business.

My Top 10 D This Season
Makar hasn't been at his best this year. There's not a defenseman in the world that I'd trade him for, but he's not at the top for this season.
Hughes and Josi should be 1 and 2 imo.

I lean towards agreeing with this, but it would need a very deep dive from the pro scouts beforehand.
As alluded to by others, a buyout is long but not crazy expensive, which is a factor that makes me think they should go for it. I can see the argument against it too though.

Word of advice from Anus. You shouldn't use the words sphincter and juice so close to one another.

How do they move on? I don't think teams will be lining up. Maybe an Arizona or SJ takes him, but I'm not so sure. Feels like I situation where you have to make it work somehow.

New Third Pairing Next Year
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>earl08</b></div><div>Behrens is a priority for CMac & Malinski is basically a lock to start. I don't see a need to add any other starting D. I also think if anyone is traded, its one of the 2nd pair; CMac doesn't have a built-in rplc at 3C. However, he could prob get away with Kovalenko at 3C in a pinch. Whoever is moved doesn't have to be replaced right away; they could get picks to be swapped for a rental later. I think rentals are going to become a thing going forward for the Avs</div></div>
Signing Behrens may be a priority, but that doesn't mean he jumps straight to the NHL. And I'm increasingly hesitant to say Malinski has a spot. He might, but I'm not as sure as I once was.
In any case, I can't see them moving another top 4 dman after having already done so with Byram. If the team is forced to move out salary, Colton is the easiest to replace.

New Third Pairing Next Year
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Burnout</b></div><div>Ross Colton is not a cap dump, but Montreal wouldn't want him.
I don't think any rebuilding team is all that interested in taking on cap space to improve their bottom 6 C, especially given the term on Colton's contract. Montreal's hoping to get more than 25 games combined from Dvorak and Dach next season. Newhook has also started to show serious improvements at center since coming back from injury. Them, Suzuki and Evans means Montreal's unlikely to be in the market for a center who isn't either a young, true top-6 C or a guy with the potential to be that.
It doesn't really matter if Evans will be re-signed are not or what it would cost Montreal in a trade, Colton doesn't make sense as a trade target.</div></div>
I guess I don't really view them as a rebuilding team per se. They have a good young core and prospects that are up and coming. They just need to surround them with the right guys to help take the next step.
I can certainly see your point regarding Dvorak. Him and Colton are kind of redundant. Wasn't sure of his status and if he'll be back.

I think he is a pretty material improvement offensively. Points per 60 is 1.76 compared to 1.28 for Evans. He generates more shots and also finishes better, while also being a pain in the rear end to play against. To me that would be something Montreal would want.
Obviously I like Evans too. I just figured that if he wasn't going to extend and be a longer term piece then this might make sense.

Well, you're not getting Lehkonen back, but I think you'd like Colton. I understand he's not the most exciting acquisition, but I do think he makes that team better.
Is Evans likely to extend in Montreal? If so then I could see why this wouldn't make sense.

I'll just make two points while also conceding that's it's unlikely this becomes a success. One is Drouin, who has bought in and added an element to his game that has never been there. Two is Buffalo's system/culture, in which it's a lot easier and more comfortable to coast.
Again, I'm not saying it will work. But Krebs is a guy that was the engine of his team in the WHL. He has some ability, and it's worth the flyer. He'll be easy to trade if needed, so it's not a big risk.

I don't disagree, but it's a pretty easy fix if he doesn't work out. Looking for a 4C at the tdl is not a bad place to be.
On the other hand, if he buys into Bednar's system and starts to click a little bit, then maybe the team has found a third liner for the future. Worth a shot imo, as it's really cap space and the third that are the main return.

Colton's cap hit is fine for what he brings. Maybe a little steep but not a lot. Heck, Dvorak makes more than him, and Habs fans wanted a lot to move him back when he was healthy.
I'd happily keep Colton if it weren't necessary to find cap somewhere. To me both teams get a piece they can use in the trade.

I do think they could use Manson but also suspect you're right about them valuing Laughton very highly (likely too highly). Maybe I'll change the next one to futures for Manson.

The Best Avs ACGM
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TJTwolf</b></div><div>You've disappointed me in that Monahan wasn't re-signed by MTL and traded to the Avs for their first round pick in 2026.
Not sure whether MTL would have interest in Colton but Kovacevic is definitely a guy the Avs should be looking at imo but I'd probably pass on the Manson for Laughton deal from the Avs PoV and keep Manson if possible and maybe give Trenin a shot at the 3C job (I like Walker but I'd rather keep Manson's nastiness and physicality over 'more of the same' in Walker and not sure JK has the nastiness of JM). Trenin hasn't really actually played that much at C though even if listed as one (or at least he hasn't taken many face offs which to me means he hasn't played C much) but then the same was true for Colton prior to this year. Yakov has definitely been the most impressive of the 'deadline' additions for me so far, and has a rep for taking other young Russians under his wing and might just have Kovalenko actually on his wing too.</div></div>
I think the team needs Walker more than you do. If Kovacevic can be Manson lite, then I think that's enough. Basically it comes down to if Manson + Malinski > Kovacevic + Walker. Close call but I like the latter, and especially if Walker comes on a good deal.
Edit: Fair point about 3C. There are other options, one of which could be Trenin. Maybe even Kovalenko, although it's tough to say considering he hasn't played a single game yet.

I feel like Colton would make their bottom six better but also recognize they have a lot of forwards when healthy. I could see it happening if they also moved, say Evans.
Ultimately the Avs could move Colton for a pick and make a different offer for Kovacevic, but I went this route for the sake of simplicity.
