IF THEY HAD 50 PERCENT CHANCE THEYD STILL LOSE
I get the inclination to keep Gavrikov but they really should trade him, especially considering how much they could extract from a contending team for him relative to the player he is, which is an okay middle pair defenseman.
I also understand wanting "stability" in the form of a guy who can eat minutes and shelter some of the young guys, but you can get that in free agency or via an offseason trade without potentially costing yourself a first round pick. Besides, long term the jackets probably want Mateychuck and Jircek taking those top four spots and they already have a lot of middle-bottom pair guys signed or RFA, so locking yourself into a 4-5yr contract with another guy who is already in his late 20s might not be the best play long term.
I think the jackets have drafted really well with the picks they have, despite not being able to pick super high, I'd continue to trust that process and hope they get more than two swings in the first 64 picks this year.

I'm gonna be really sad if we have to watch another year of Roslovic getting top 6 minutes with 3rd line offensive results and 4th line defense.

I don't see Jake retiring and passing up $8.25mil when he can sit on LTIR and get paid and then retire after the season. It's not hitting the cap number either way, so he's going to collect his money.
Fantilli looks like he's going to be a very solid 1C. I'm still praying for Bedard though. I haven't seen Carlsson a ton, but I really like Smith and could see him working up to 3OA over Carlsson.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dk325</b></div><div>Highly debatable and I'm tired of pretending it isn't. A healthy CBJ is just as good as Detroit and Larkin easily swings the advantage in CBJ's favour. The CBJ's prospect/youth pool is every bit as promising as Detroits is too so Larkin sacrifices nothing and gains better veteran players and his best friend to play with in Columbus. Larkin signing in Columbus is a no brainer for him and is almost certainly going to happen on a team friendly deal after Yzerman screws up the negotiations in Detroit with his overinflated ego.</div></div>
I don't know about that. Detroit is probably a year ahead of Columbus in rebuild, although without Larkin that looks a lot rougher for them. Copp is not a 1c and Kasper isn't anywhere near ready yet. Maybe Veleno? Maybe Fabbri? I'd honestly take Columbus's center depth over that, which is saying something. That said, their defensive ducks are much closer to being in a row than ours, and they definitely have a more stable goalie situation. If Larkin stays, I think they're in a better position for 23-24 than us. If he goes, they're very screwed unless they manage to land Horvat or a blockbuster trade.
It does feel like the Yzerplan is stalling out a bit, though.

The defense is indeed still poo and the money for Maatta and Anderson would be better spent on someone like Graves.
Lasrkin is indeed a low-end 1C and is head and shoulders above our best current option.
I have absolutely no reason to beleive that Bedard, Fantilli or Carlson will be a legit 1C in the NHL within the next 3 years until proven otherwise.</div></div>
18.5 minutes.
I did a top 96 center list earlier in the year and had Larkin around 28 and I think Jenner around 52. I’d say he’s nose and eyes above our current 1C. Maybe not head and shoulders, but we’re splitting theoretical hairs
Except comparatively, similar players of their caliber in a draft like this have become 1Cs pretty quickly. Happens all the time. You know the top 20 centers in the league? They all came from the draft. The best ones were picked in the top three.

Congratulations! You've found a way to make the Blue Jackets brain trust say, "No, that's not a good enough deal for Erik Gudbranson; we'll keep him." The Blue Jackets are already replete with middle- and bottom-6 wingers; they certainly don't need to add one with that albatross of a contract.

You must have already forgotten that Johnny Gaudreau took less to come to Columbus.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SK101</b></div><div>If the jackets get fantilli in this scenario they only need to sign one of these centers. Agreed. I wouldn't mind Larkin if it's a reasonable price, and I like Horvat, but he is the same player as Jenner, who we have on a team friendly deal. I'm not sure he makes sense for us.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>turtlemountain</b></div><div>I’m amazed that this team is cap compliant. Surprised you want to ship out Laine and Boqvist tho</div></div>
Laine is great to have when he's actually playing, but man that guy misses a lot of time. Hopefully he's just taking it easy since the team is bad, and he can put a couple full seasons together moving forward.
Boqvist is flashy but unreliable. Slight, oft injured, and doesn't play physical or aggressive defense. Jackets are probably going to have to sell low on him in the summer unless he has a resurgence in the second half of the season.

Philly or NJ certainly would have been his 1st choice had they had the cap space.
This is just a hypothetical to see if it was remotely possible to squeeze them in.
I'm sure they (Horvat & Larkin) are both happy in the cities they are currently playing in.
Even luring 1 top name center UFA would help the Jackets, especially given the fact they will unfortunately be drafting very high again this year.</div></div>
You do realize that only McDavid has more goals than Horvat.

CBJ Minimum Roster
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bluejackets2000</b></div><div>Personally, I think the Jackets cannot wait for development of Johnson or Sillinger to take over 1C/2C duties.
The problems they are having at scoring/defense are resulting from the middle of the ice, starting at C, as well as D and G position.
Jenner is not getting any younger, Sillinger is in a sophmore slump, and Roslovic is very hit or miss (mostly miss).
It would be a bonus to have Voracek back next year for his puck control and passing skills from the RW position, but that is a big uncertainty.
Foudy and Bemstrom need a scenery change, they just are not going to get any better or advance in Columbus.
With the injuries and upcoming grind of heavy schedule the rest of the way (49 games in 106 days) ...they will finish bottom 5 in the league.
Next year's draft will be deep enough to get an impact player even at #5, so I would expect them to take the best Center with their 1st round pick.
They may need to sign/trade for an experienced two-way center to help with the depth.
Bjork is a pleasant surprise, and it will be interesting to see how the defense develops over the next couple of years.
Don't count out Blankenburg, even undersized, he has a unique vision of the ice and high compete level, so he may stay in the mix for awhile.
Finally, in Goal I just don't think Elvis is the answer long term, they just may have to move on.
He may have been at one time, but the Kivlenieks accident really did mess him up a bit.
He just cannot seem to stand tall when needed in net during those rare close games to give the Jackets a chance.</div></div>
Kent Johnson may be closer to taking that 1C role than you think. And as you mentioned, they could get that guy in this summer's draft as well. Even at #5, I think that player should be just as impactful if not more than KJ in their draft +2 year.
I still believe in Elvis. His ability hasn't gone anywhere, he's just trying too hard. He'll work his way out of this funk and get back to being a solid #1. Hopefully it takes him all year to do that though, because we sure could use one of those top two guys in the draft.

CBJ Minimum Roster
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TheeDjeeEem</b></div><div>I felt the same about Mateychuk but with a minimum contract at LD that leaves a full roster w 4M in space... what do you think about the rest of it? Trade Bjork as RFA?</div></div>
As of now, it looks to me like Berni would be re-signed at around 1-1.5m on a 1-2 year deal to play the 3rd LD pair over Mateychuk. Mateychuk is going to be really good, but he needs to play in the AHL first to prove he can produce consistently and hold up against grown men.
I think Bjork can be had on a 1-2 year deal for 1m or maybe slightly more if he plays well the rest of the way, though wouldn't be opposed to trading his rights if someone was really interested.
I'd move Marchenko to his (preferred) left wing.
Move Voracek to LTIR with his lingering concussion symptoms.
Put Kent Johnson in the middle
Roslovic on the right wing.
I'd rather start Blankenburg than Gudbranson if he's healthy.
Scratch Foudy and put Danforth in the lineup.
Re-sign Olivier on a 1 or 2 year deal around 1m to be a healthy scratch.
There is also a decent chance Texier comes back and slots into the middle-6 somewhere.
