Start the rebuild
Wow, thats an interesting trade for the red wings. Depends if GhostBear returns or not if these are off-season deals. I like moving Maata and the 2nd, im a little hesitant moving Buium AND Soderblom, I think you can make due with adding either of two lvl B prospects but not both if youre taking 6.5mil for the next 3yrs. Wings might have ASP their 23 draft pick RHD up by then and still unfortunately have Holl for another 2 after this.
Buium could be a good bottom pairing dman in the NHL down the road and Soderblom just needs to play more consistent. Its not a development thing, its unfortunately the player. Same thing with Anthony Mantha.
Wings say no. The cap, term and M-NTC that kicks in25-26 for a now 31yr old Faulk scares me and probably Yzerman as well.
Might as well try to sign GhostBear for another 3yrs for the same price or less

I'm sure the value is fine but Vancouver passes the player doesn't really fit our needs, we are more so looking for a High end top 6 winger, or a good second line center

Next Up Buch
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>AC14</b></div><div>Not sure. But in all reality that’s a very similar return that I asked for that Timo Meier got as an expiring RFA with a 10m QO. You’re asking for an 1st liner at half of a normal 1st liners cap hit all while having us take on additional year on the Garland contract which is an ok contract but certainly does nothing to help us reach our goals.
Hell what you proposed is much worse than Horvat just netted you guys as an expiring UFA.
Baseline for my thinking was
Willander > Mukmahdullin
Woo/Brusc = Ohkotiuk
Johnsson was a one year cap dump not 3
And there’s no Zetterlund</div></div>
Taking on the Garland contract is a fair point and requires some value attached to it besides STL hypothetically liking him as a player. But also consider that
a) Buch has a M-NTC (could angle his way to 2-4 particular teams)
b) Most teams that would be interested in Buch do not have cap space (this was listed as a major reason why we got Zadorov for cheap despite CGY not wanting to move him to us)
c) Other interested teams may not have prospects as good as Lekkerimaki or a contract they can easily move to make cap space.
The thing with Willander and Bruscewitz is that they are RHD, which is a premium asset and the kind that never gets moved. Every team in the league that offered a valuable piece to NYR in the last 2-3 years has asked for Schneider (including us with Miller probably) and it hasn't happened, young RHD just don't get moved. Consider further that RHD is an area of need for VAN and we have barely had any in the system at all over the last number of years, let alone prospects as good as those guys look right now. I don't think they can be compared to the Makmahdullin or Ohkotiuk (especially cause SJS clearly went for quantity over quality in that specific deal). I understand Buch is a premier asset and you have to ask high, but in reality VAN isn't including one of those guys let alone both.
I think Garland + Lekkerimaki + 1st 2024 for Buch is at least a solid framework for a deal with the understanding that the market will dictate if anything else needs to be added.

Elite Winger for near ready D
I keep thinking about the Matt Duchene trade as a comp. Consensus was that was a fleecing by Sakic but Armstrong is a pretty good trader in his own right so given the situation maybe he could pull something similar.
D with tons of upside
prospect
picks
The problem is, everyone LOVES prospects so coming up with a reasonable trade is always going to upset the apple cart. The guys I'm thinking of are like Scott Morrow, Simon Edvinsson, Tom Willander, etc. No fans on this site are ever gonna include those guys, even in a 1 for 1, but I feel like that would be where Armstrong would want things to go.

Blues fans thoughts on the season
If we go down the route of trading Buchnevich, we should get back a really solid prospect and draft pick. I think Washington might be a decent fit for Ovi. If Blues do half retention on Buch they can get a serious prospect, 1st round pick and probably a 2nd. If we trade Buchnevich, I think we keep Kapanen to plug into a middle six role. He can extend for a 1-2 year deal at a fairly reasonable price. Buch being gone gives the flexibility to bring up 2 of the 3 top forward prospects in Dvorsky, Snuggerud, or Bolduc.
As for defense, we need to trade Leddy… hes bad. Do half retention there and sign perunovich for cheap. I’d then either sign a LD and a RD or run with Tucker and sign a RD. Gotta draft a defenseman and this upcoming draft seems loaded defensively.
Projected Lines for 2024-25
Neighbours - Thomas - Kyrou
Hayes - Schenn - Snuggerud
Saad - Dvorsky - Kapanen
Toropchenko - Alexandrov - Sundqvist
Perunovich - Parayko
Krug - Faulk
Tucker - FA (thinking Roy)
Binnington - Hofer

Literally watch his games and look at his number
Ik he hasn’t been the best but Krug has had a long and good career and he’s short too

Add a top 4 dman
There's 2mil in Pavelski performance bonuses to consider (unless you're suggesting Pavelski takes 1mil in cap hit next year) and I think Pesce can garner closer to 7mil, but a Suter buyout would cover most of that. Overall, the addition of Pesce addresses the only real holes in an otherwise deep & talented roster!

Fair Value
Still believe there’s a large blockbuster to be had between Columbus and Winnipeg. Don’t believe boquist and chinakhov are the right adds for Winnipeg, rental or not helly gets you a year and hope the backup wins the battle, and gets you out from under Elvis extension. Jets have a window to gamble on Elvis and broisset, before some kids could be ready. Jets major needs would be a big physical rhd dman, possibly peake, and a change of scenery sillinger would be a great gamble also. Obviously would need some picks and kids possibly with helly to even it out. Possibly reduce the first, to save for a rental with a Columbus push for the playoffs.

Hopefull offseason
If that is what it costs to acquire Parayko, I don't think the Leafs are interested. We will be lucky to get 2 years of value out of that Parayko contract before its un-moveable. Brodie is a capable player and only on a 1 year commitment. Lilly is a good player under team control. Plus futures.
I love the guy and its clear so do Blues fans, but that contract is gonna be an anchor and I think there are other pretty good RD's that are acquire-able with less commitment. Even if they are a bit worse than Parayko.

Fix the defense
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BluesReport18</b></div><div>I have high faith in Tucker I think if he was given a top 4 spot he would run with it. And yeah Durzi could probably play with Faulk and that could be a good pair I wouldn't want to put him with Paryako. With Scandella I'm not a fan of his but I don't think it's worth buying him out when you could just let him walk in free agency. Or on the bonus he has an average season and you can flip him at the deadline for something.</div></div>
I'm a believer in Tucker stepping into the top-4 soon as well. If we dump Leddy and Krug, I wouldn't mind keeping Scandella, but I would rather give Tucker and Perunovich their opportunity.

Back to playoffs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BluesReport18</b></div><div>I think it's fine to have right handed dmen playing the left side. But if they really hated it they could move one of boqvist or peeke and get an okay return.
Also Sundqvist is literally nothing like Roslovic. Like nothing. He would be an upgrade on the penalty kill and give a netfront presence on the powerplay. On top of that he is great in the locker room and every team he goes to loves him in their locker room.</div></div>
It wasn’t a value judgment on the handedness, just an observation that it was funny. It’s a quirk of how the roster is shaping up. Agree that it’s more likely they try to deal from that position of strength (Boqvist, Peeke) than add more.
What I’m saying is that every team has a Sundqvist or two on its roster, and usually several. Columbus has bottom six wingers who can PK and are loved by their teammates, whether it’s Roslovic or Danforth or Robinson. Nyquist was just here for several years literally filling that exact role down to bumper and PK. You’re just more familiar with Sundqvist because you’re a Blues fan.

What to do with this mess
Buffalo doesn’t need any retention on Toffoli, and you’re already asking for a lot for a guy on a one-year deal. Without an extension in place you can’t expect to get that much.
